Could someone explain why my Word files won't open for anyone else? If I email myself Word files from my Mac at home to my Windows machine at work, they open fine. If I send them to anyone else, they won't open. Maybe it's not "anyone else", but there are two people in particular for the past couple of weeks that I have had to email things to, and every time I send them, I get an email back from them saying the file won't open. These are extremely time-sensitive documents that have to be reviewed and this is driving me CRAZY! Absolutely driving me nuts!

Can anyone offer ideas of how to solve this? The point of buying Office for the Mac (for OSX) was so that I could "seemlessly" (or as close to seemlessly as one can expect) exchange files with people using Windows machines. This is seriously becoming a major problem. I welcome your advice.

First of all, make sure you put *.doc at the end of the name as Windows is sensitive about that. I've made that mistake a couple of times myself. Also make sure that the images you have in the files aren't in TIFF format that Mac Word itself makes them as Windows users can't see them (my memory is flaky on this, search the forum for confirmation and how to enter them as non-TIFF).

Save them as a RTF if you need to.

Some Windows e-mail clients don't like attachments that are part of the text - they only recognise them as attachments if they are at the end of the e-mail, so always place your attachments at the bottom of the e-mails.

If you have Panther, make sure you have selected the "Always send Windows friendly attachments" option in the Edit>Attachments menu. (Note to self - that should be "Windows-friendly" Apple!)

If that doesn't work, Zip the files first before sending them.

When forming a compound adjective consisting of an adverb and adjective, if the adverb ends in -ly, modern usage favors omitting the hyphen.

Windows isn't an adjective, it's a noun.
Friendly isn't an adverb, it's an adjective.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

In the phrase "Windows friendly attachment", they are an adjective and adverb, respectively.

No, they are not! "Windows" can never be an adjective and friendly would be "in a friendly way" if it was an adverb.

Windows can be an adjective, as in "I have a Windows PC." In that statement, "Windows" is an adjective describing the type of PC. Now, "friendly" is an adverb, which further clarifies the adjective "Windows," which clarifies the type of attachment.

You Mac will probably e-mail two files for each Word file. Although I thought this was different under OS X, in my experience, two files are sent. I think these are the data fork and the resource fork. They have similar names, expect the latter is preceded with an underscore.

It may be that they are trying to open the wrong file (the resource fork). Mail under 10.3 strips this out (that's the Windows-friendly bit) but in 10.2.x and before this was an occasional problem which I had.

I disagree. Here Windows is a noun. "Windows-friendly" == "friendly toward Windows," just as "Earth-friendly" means "friendly toward the Earth," where Earth certainly is not an adjective.

Also, "friendly" is an adjective, not an adverb. I hope we can all agree that "attachments" is a noun. If so, then "friendly" must be an adjective because adverbs cannot modify a noun. If you don't like that, try this:
"I am friendly." This is a proper sentence (friendly is an adjective).
"I am quickly." This is an improper sentence (quickly is an adverb).

I agree that it should be "Windows-friendly."
