In the Word 2000 (Windows), I can print "2 pages per sheet" (located in the "page setup" menu), but I don't see an equivalent in Word X. Am I missing something?

Yes, because the option you want is in Print itself.

Print (Layout, Pages per Sheet) Under Panther.

I found that option, but I was hoping that wasn't the only way. It doesn't work the same way.

In Word 2000, setting up "2 pages per sheet" is like working on a 5.5 x 8.5 sheet. In Word X, printing 2 pages per sheet, reduces your 8.8x11 document to fit on a half sheet. Problem is it shrinks everything -- small fonts -- and I'm having trouble controlling the margins. If I have minimal margins on the full-size doc, when I print, I have huge margins. I'm not sure if there's a way to adjust or control the font size or margins.

Interestingly, when I search the help files, there appears to be a "2 pages per sheet" option in the East Asian languages.

I do presentations in which I'm accustomed to using half pages sheets. I realize I could do columns, but I need to be able to place some things flush right (with text flush left as well, on the same line).

Any help would be appreciated!

I think it depends upon what printer you're using.

The only thing I can think of is columns as you mentioned... but couldn't you use tabs for getting the text both flush both left and right? I must be miss understanding something. How would you do this on Windows even?

In my Windows version, I can double-click on the right margin, type text, and it will be flushed right. But that doesn't work in columns (unless I'm missing something). Seems to be the same in Word X.

Could you set a custom page size that is half the size of the paper you're using (letter/A4 etc), then print 2 pages per page in the print options.

I think that wouldn't need to be shrunk down, as it would already be the correct size to fit 2 pages onto the one physical page. All the edit options (flush right etc) would work as normal, because it would be a set size of page. You coudl also select the font size you require.

I used to do something similar to print pages of notes that I could fit into a filofax. Haven't tried this, but it should (ymmv) work.

Thanks for the suggestion. I wondered about that, but it still shrunk the document.

Still working on it ...

You really just want landscape orientation with two columns. You use tabs to get text flush left and flush right.

See the example file I put in my .Mac public folder. http://homepage.mac.com/chabig/FileSharing5.html

Okay, I'm convinced, but I need you to walk me through this. That never worked for me in Word 2000, and I haven't been able to get it to work in Word X, yet.

What steps do I take to get it to do flush right, as in your test doc? Thanks!

This is not a just limitation of MS Word:mac vs MS Word 2000 (Windows) w.r.t the option for printing "2 pages per sheet".

AFAIK this is an example of a fundamental limitation in the OS X print paradigm -- document formats in OS X are directly linked to media sizes. In other words... the OS X print paradigm assumes that the size of the media is the same as the size of the document. Hence OS X does not allow you to print multiple pages of any document to a single piece of media without scaling them - even if they would easily 'fit' without scaling,

BTW you can demonstrate this by formatting a Letter document in any OS X application and then trying to print it 'two up' on Tabloid media.

Here's what I did:

1) I went to Page Setup and selected Landscape orientation
2) In Format -> Columns I selected two columns. I just accepted the default column settings, but you could adjust it if you wish.
3) Then to get the text I just kept everything left aligned, but I put a right tab on the right margin. Then type the text you want on the left--it is left aligned. Hit tab. Then type the text you want on the right margin.

You get a right tab by clicking the bent arrow symbol in the upper left window boundary, under the red close button, until it looks like a left facing arrow. Then click on the ruler where you want to place the tab. In this case it's easy to place the tab anywhere on the ruler and then drag it to the right margin.

You can also tweak tabs under Format -> Tabs. Refer to Word Help for more information.

Good luck,
Chris

Ah, that's what I didn't do. Problem solved. Thanks!
