Hello All,

I think that I just became the latest fan of a program called 'LaunchBar' by Objective Developement. What a great program, my aliases folder on my dock is now gone!

But that's not why I post ...

Last time I found a program so immediately usefull was when Watson came out. I wonder if this 'functionality' will be incorporated into some future release of MacOS ala Sherlock.

What do you think? Will another small software maker be 'absorbed' from a functionality aspect?

Regards,

I seriously doubt that it would. Look at Sherlock 2, and you can see where it was going... (it already had other channels for reference and such). Look at today's finder, etc. and I only see the dock. I think Apple will concentrate more on sprucing up the dock (which does sorely need an update) rather than creating a launchbar rip.

I doubt it but it's not impossible that Apple includes some sort of launchbar functionality in a search box on the desktop or in the menu bar. Even if apple is going to include something like this it isn't going to be as powerful or flexible as Launchbar is. Power users will still use Launchbar, like current power users still prefer watson ( at least I do )...

Launchbar is just a copy from the Apple owned NextOS.

Copy or not, it's fantastic. I don't care whether or not Apple implement it themselves (however, I doubt they will), as long as I can still use it somehow.

No, the people that made LaunchBar on NeXT OS are still making the OS X one, if you don't believe me, go looking for the old one on the site. Next you'll be telling me that OmniWeb is a copy from the Apple owned NeXT too...

What I mean is the whole idea of the thing is a copy of the docks from the NeXT OS anyway.

Oh and omniweb is a copy of several other web browsers

Um. LaunchBar is so un - docklike that it's not even funny. After I installed it, I was saying 'Dock? What dock?' I suppose that I do use it to let me know what apps are running (the dock that is).

Are we talking about the same launchbar app?

Rumor is that Apple is indeed making an OS X system feature very similar to Launchbar. Except It will be called "LUNCHbar," and will introduce the concept of a deli and/or cafeteria metaphor for launching applications or documents.

Did anyone here use MindControl on Mac OS 9? I loved it. At its core, it was very similar to Launch Bar, though it didn't search through your files and set up aliases automatically; you had to set them up manually. I don't know which came first; I was under the impression that LaunchBar was around on the NeXT at the same time. I suspect it's independent development...

I've tried LaunchBar, and I don't like it as much as mind control. I'm not sure what it is, but I'd rather set up the items manually and see what I'm typing.

The biggest reason I don't think Apple would integrate something like Launchbar is: As great, wonderful, awesome, and amazing as LaunchBar is, it's not a very "Apple" product. Most of Apple's stuff is GUI/mouse oriented, while LaunchBar is the king of keyboard geek programs.

That is not to say that Apple apps don't use the keyboard, or that LaunchBar doesn't have a GUI. But it just seems like the sort of direction that Apple would not tend to go on its own.

I'm just thankful that it exists....

What a troll. Why not postulate whether Apple will "doom" other shareware authors to obscurity: iSeek, DragThing, Snapz Pro X, FSF, Windows . . .
