I just got an email from giganews that they will be increasing their retention for most of their newgroups to 30 days. Which means some newsgroups will have 5 million or more headers.

my question is: is there any news reader for OSX that will be able to download 5 million headers.

I currently use thoth and i think it only does 999,999--or am i wrong?

Did giganews say this was going to affect binaries or just text groups?

I am spoiled because the binary-oriented readers are a lot better on PC. I have tried HogWasher, MT-News, and Thoth and they all have their problems.

I would love to commission a developer to implement some of my ideas for a reader that would be the end all of other readers. Or I can just learn on my own and spend years trying to know what I am doing.

How does Pan fare with mass binary downloads (not pictures, but larger binaries)?

jEBUS... you're right.

I was looking through the full list two days ago and there was 2 million headers.

I couldn't even tell you how long it took to download headers, filter, then resort.

As much as I might like the retention, this is almost counter-productive.
