I recently came across this piece of software and it looks like a pretty decent alternative to the Mac OS X finder. Although it does have a few features I don't care for (integrated terminal and PDF viewer), its file management features are great.

I was just curious if anybody on this forum uses it as their default file manager. If so...

How is it speed and stability wise?

Does it offer a spatial file viewer also?

How does the app handle when connecting to shared networking volumes?

I'd appreciate any comments.

Thanks,

Mike

I use it and used its predecessor- Snax. It is a nice bit of software. It is stable, speed has increased and is no longer a CPU hog. There are specific times that I find it more useful than Finder. I do not use as the default file manager-- probably my prejudice from so many years of Finder.

I used path finder off and on for a while but never took the jump. One thing I like about it is how it views folders. It has a what I think is a true global setting. you can view all the folders the same and set them all to be views the same or have a few do whatever you want like list.

This is where I think the finder fails big time. If I want all the folder windows to be viewed in a global setting, I don't want to have to go through and apply global setting to each folder. and deleting .ds_store doesn't make the folder view global and the terminal trick to apply a global .ds_store to every folder in your system never worked for me.

but all that integrated stuff I didn't go for.

I used it quite often pre-Panther (even going as far as to register my copy), since I thought the old Finder wasn't really that great. Since 10.3 however, I don't find my self using it - I actually like the new Finder.

But, PathFinder does have much better icon preview support (incl. text file and pdf file rendering) and a few other nice features. I think there is a time-limited demo, so give it a try.

I own PF and it's quite nice but not a full Finder replacement IMO.

It has problems with SMB shares in networking and the contextual menu functionality is not up to par with the Finder.

I rarely use it as a result.

I do like the integration of the terminal and file viewer though.
