Hi, for some reason now, when I get new email and messenger notifies me, I go to check it through messenger and messenger tries to use safari as my browser, but I don't have it anymore on my computer (kept screwing up my computer for some reason) and not IE (yes, I still use IE) so I can't check my mail through messenger.
How do I change the preference of using IE instead of Safari on messenger? I can't seem to find it...

If you have Panther you change the default browser setting in the preferences of Safari. If you have deleted Safari, you made a mistake. You shall not delete Apple applications.
Now you have to download MisFox to change the setting.

The reason why I deleted Safari after installing it was that it kept screwing up my internet connection and my flatmate's internet connection through our router. The only way to fix the problem was to erase Safari.
So, does anyone know how to change the browser preference that msn messenger uses to open up email?

If you're using Panther you can't use the version of Safari you downloaded which I think is still an older version. You'll need your Panther install CD.
Apple really should've left browser choice in System Preferences like it was in Jaguar.

my web browser preference is set at IE in system preferences and my msn messenger is still trying to use safari to open my email from the messenger window to no avail.
This just started I think after downloading the recent security updates.
Any suggestions?
BTW, I downloaded that prefpanes thing but I can't seem to find where it is in my systemm preferences panel!

make sure you put the prefpane in the "PreferencePanes" folder in the "Library" folder of your home folder and go ahead and create the folder if it doesn't exist.

MisFox is easier to use, but this guy has chosen to completely ignore it.

This fix was posted over at Apple's Discussion forum:
Here's what you do.
1.) Go to /private/tmp/501/TemporaryItems/
At the finder level:
a.) Look at the menu bar
b.) From the "Go" menu, choose "Go to folder"
c.) Enter "/private/tmp/501/TemporaryItems/" (without the quotes)
2.) Change the view to list mode, sort by "Date Modified" and in descending order (latest file at the top).
3.) Launch MSN Messenger, click the "mail" button... you need to be fast here... two files will be created, one is called "IE Control Cache.lck" and the other will be called "msmsgrtempfffbb600.html" (or something that looks VERY close to that). The MOMENT you see the html file created, DRAG it out of the Temporary Items folder to your desktop.
4.) Take a deep breath, you're almost there.
5.) Click on the file's icon once such that its selected, hit "Command I" to Get Info (or go to "File" from the Menu bar and choose "Get Info")
6.) Toggle down the "Open With" carrot, and from the pull down, choose the application you want MSN Messenger to check your Hotmail mail with (I like Safari, but you can choose whatever you want)
7.) Click "Change All..."
8.) Acknowledge the "Change All..." request, close the Get Info window, delete the html file, close all open windows... YOU ARE DONE!
Now.. go back to MSN.. click the "Mail" icon and your browser of choice will automatically log into hotmail and get your latest spam email for you.

I go to "Go to folder" and put that address in, it says that folder cannot be found.

Try this pathway instead:
/private/tmp/501/TemporaryItems/

It's really annoying how that html file is suddenly associated with InDesign. But that fix worked! Thanks a ton!

Ack, yes! I just installed InDesign a short while ago, and was very surprised when I clicked on the mail button in MSN Messenger, only to have InDesign open. Luckily the tip Spliff posted worked perfectly!

Try putting a space between "Temporary" and "Items" so that you go to:
/private/tmp/501/Temporary Items/
