For the past few months I've had email alerts from macupdate informing me of when programs were updated, all for free...

Now they're turning the service into a subscription fee based one....and I don't know if it's worth $20 a year, and I'm still paying off my G5...

so are there any alternatives in knowning when software is updated that isn't an annual subscription ? I can handle a one off fee, or if there's something free ?

Have you thought about just manually checking the MacUpdate page each day? Or, even better, download and use MUMenu...that way you can be notified of new updates up in the menu bar each time something is loaded onto MacUpdate for free? Very simple.

You can use the RSS feed to find new updates, or there is a dedicated program which will tell you if any of your software is out of date.

^^ Turns out Update Radar (the app I was thinking of) has been purchased by MU for the new service - how crappy

You might also think about how vital it is for you to update applications the day an update is released. If it runs it runs, and if not you can check from time to time yourself.
Not subscribing to such a service means less stress for me.

I think I've figured out some way to do it, get a browser like omniweb that can automaitcally check for updates to web pages, and bookmark the pages of the software you're interested in... except you couldn't do it with macupdate because of the comments users a leaving, but version tracker, has a seperate page that doesn't have comments...

not sure if that'll work guess I'll have to wait until some software is updated to find out.
