Hi!

I'm trying to connect to my shared iTunes tunes at my home server (win xp pro) from work (PB G4, 10.3).

The feature of connecting though the internet was removed some versions ago. Only local networks are now supported.

My hope is to use a VPN (virtual private network) connection to connect to my home network. Then that network would be my local network and the iTunes shared music would show up.

The problem is, it doesn't seem to work and I wonder if anyone has any clues on how to get it to work.

I've set up the VPN server and connected to it. Using tcpdump, I see that when iTunes plays music from the music store, the packets get routed to the VPN server. I can also ping the iTunes server on the local adress (192.168.9.100). In other words, the VPN seems to work. However, the shared music doesn't show up.

When the PB is connected to my home network through airport, the shared music shows up.

I've tried to manually "open stream" daap://192.168.9.100, without success.

Any ideas anyone?

Are both machines on the same subnet? If you are running a VPN between two routers, you probably have different subnets. If you're just using a software VPN client at your house, you're probably on the same subnet. I believe that you need to be on the same subnet for iTunes to work.

If you're using tcpdump, check to see if there are any broadcast packets that are sent out when you try to connect over the network. Perhaps the VPN router is not forwarding these (routers will often drop broadcasts and not forward them).

Simply download Rendezvous Proxy (Make sure you have Java Installed), run it and do the following:

Press 'Add Host'

IP Address: (iTunes Host LAN Address e.g 192.168.1.2)

Port: 3689

Host Label: ANYTHING

Service Text: LEAVE BLANK

Service type: _daap_tcp. (iTunes Host)

Then minimize it to the system tray

Connect VPN, open iTunes (making sure iTune is running on the Host computer too) and ANYTHING will appear under shared music.

you can also use zerospan ( www.zerospan.org ) which is a free (gpl) way to do this. much easier than setting up a proxy or SSH - no IP addresses required or anything.
