I can download, fill in and print forms from the IRS very nicely. But for some reason, the data I put in cannot be saved. What is up with this?

I can't find anything on the IRS website justifying this weirdness. It's a 37-page document and I'd like to be able to stop working on it and come back to it later --- otherwise I have to keep the computer and with Acrobat running for a week or longer.

IIRC, Adobe sells that functionality as a separate product, you don't get it for free with Reader. I remember being annoyed with this a few months ago, and I checked and the Windows version is the same way.

I thought they sold a "forms addon" kind of thing, but after a quick look around Adobe's site I can't find it. I guess you have to buy the whole Professional package.

Ugh. I have the full version of Acrobat 4.0 that runs under classic. Maybe that will let me do it; I'll try it.

The IRS website says:

"To view, complete and print IRS fill-in forms you'll need the freely available Acrobat Reader software installed on your computer. Acrobat Reader does not allow you to save your completed forms to disk. The ability to save completed forms is available commercially with the Adobe Acrobat product suite."

What do you make of this?

I went ahead and order the Small Business Resource Guide CD-ROM 2003 from the IRS. Heck, it was free -- why not?

Interesting, that "Fill-In" plugin must be the thing I was thinking of earlier. I wonder if they have updated it since 4.0? Guess you'll find out when you get it.
