I thought I remembered hearing this was possible by using some sort of list separator in the field (though i've tried comma & semicolon with no success). A search was not helpful...

The idea is that I put, say, and unplugged alice in chains song into two genres: "rock" and "acoustic" and it shows up in both genres, instead of creating a genre that is just "acoustic rock" or something.

So is there a way to do this? (With genre-- I know I could achieve something like the same result with keywords in comments and smart playlists)

thanks

This would be useful, also having multiple Artists, so that 2 people collaborating on one track could be listed under each of the artists.

I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

You could use the new "Grouping" tag (iTunes 4.2) to acheive something similar…

I think you just use a space as the separator. Then you can put as many items into one field as you like.

Don't know if this is what you are looking for ...

Pick Multiple Genres for iTunes Songs

iTunes 4 lets you place a song into any genre for easy sorting and searching. But did you know that you can assign multiple genres to a single song? Highlight a song in your iTunes library, and then select File: Get Info. In the dialog box that appears, click on the Info tab and type your genres, separated by commas (Rock, Pop, for example), in the Genre box, and then click on OK. A future search or Smart Playlist for a particular genre will now show all songs with that genre in the Genre box. (Note that this will not work when using iTunes to browse by genre.)

No. A song in iTunes only has one genre. If you make it something like "Rock, Acoustic," you'll be creating another genre with that name (just as you said). iTunes treats genres (and all other track information) like folders as opposed to smart folders/playlists. IOW, when you browse by genre (or anything else), you are looking at what "is" instead of what "contains" what you clicked.

Don't forget you also have the Comments field at your disposal. I customized my iTunes genres by decade and style (80s New Wave, 60s R&B, etc.) and if I want to record any subtler distinctions like "Acoustic" or "Demo," I use the Comments.
