I use an IMAP email account. I noticed that messages about two weeks old and older get deleted, and I do not have a copy of them locally either. How can I tell Mail to store my sent messages locally?

have you checked in mail preferences -> accounts -> "special mailboxes" - there is an option in there for how long sent messages are kept.

Yeah but there I only have an option for storing sent messages on the server, which I do not actually want, since my email space is limited on the server.

I would like Mail to store them all locally.
