Over the weekend I had a disk failure on the Firewire drive I keep all my mp3s on. My most recent backup goes to mid-September, so at least I'm covered for the majority of files (67 gig worth).

Before I start re-ripping the CDs I've gotten since then, what's the current state of programs available to get music files off an iPod? Since I tend to transfer new CDs in their entirety to the 'Pod right after getting them, it would save me a good chunk of time to extract the files instead of ripping them from the original discs.

Ideally it would be a program that would retain the "artist/album/track.mp3" filing method that iTunes originally had them in. Is there anything out there either freeware, shareware or commercial that would do this quickly and easily? If it takes forever to run and/or leaves me with a pile of unorganized files, I'll just re-rip instead.

(This would have been a good topic to do a search on, but there's "a slight problem with the MacNN Forums database" again.)

PodWorks is the nicest I've seen, but it's not free. Otherwise I suggest iPod Viewer.

Wow... PodWorks does exactly what I needed it to! Very fast, matches the previous directory structure and copies over playlists too (which I wish I had the last two times I sold iPods to get a higher capacity model).

Definitely worth the $8 registration which I've sent off already. Thanks for the info!
