Yes, I thought it must be VERY cool that text edit can export in WORD format (esp. since I haven't upgraded work since Word 6 and really don't like starting up Classic).
So I "Save As..." a simple two-page Text Edit draft, choosing "Word" format. It saves it properly with a .doc extension. Before I send it off to a word user, I test it. Double clicking it, AppleWorks (6.2.4) starts up and pronounces, "The document translator cannot read this file." Now, actually, I think that it may be MacLink Plus that's having the problem, since sometimes upon attempting this it flashes quickly *sometimes* before the error message appears.
However, I *can* open the document in Word 6 (Classic), "Save as..." another Word doc, and AppleWorks WILL open (via MacLink Plus) that .doc document just fine.
Huh? Supposedly TextEdit is exporting in Word format. It succeeds in fooling Word into thinking it has... but can't fool AppleWorks (?MacLink Plus).
Who needs to get a bug report on this? What software is it a bug in? I've not installed MacLink, so I suppose it's a version provided with Panther. After it's run it's NOT in "Recent Applications", so maybe it's just an assistant? Is there an update for it? Anybody else experience such an issue - or can reproduce it?
I had really hoped that TextEdits export for Word format would further reduce our dependency on Word, but...

I had great hopes that the oft rumored iWrite would turn into a quality word processor, but it seems not to be.
I really don't use wp's very much, so I have no intention of springing for Word. Appleworks 6.2.7 seems to do most of what I need, but it seems kinda outta date. Want something more robust, but not Wordish overkill.
Want Word compatability, without having to give money to MS. Think an iLife app like this would be wonderful, and be good marketing for Apple... everything you need out of the box.

Have a look at Mellel or Nisus Writer Express.

I have tried Nisus Writer Express. It is not worth the money. The ability to interpret/translate Word documents is still incomplete.
Honestly, I use MS Word, alot and frankly, I like it. I don't see what many people are complaining about. Although "iWrite" would be a welcomed addition, right now MS Word works just fine.
