when i attempt to play an avi or mov file through quicktime it gives me the message that quicktime has unexpectedly quit. i have played these same movies in the past and they worked perfectly fine. i can also play these movies using another video player like video lan client but i want to be able to watch them through quicktime. does anyone have any suggestions?

some file on your system have become damaged, either QuickTime, one of the codecs you installed, or some other part of your system. To narrow that down, open Console.app, "clear" it, and open one of the movies that causes the crash, and see what gets printed in Console. If that doesn't lead you to the culprit, post it here and maybe it will lead someone else to your problem.

did you try fixing permissions and all that mumbo-jumbo?

sorry, that doesn't point to an easy answer. Can you open these movies in other QT-based players (like Cellulo)?

anyway, to fix it I think you might have to reinstall quicktime. try fixing permissions, running disk first aid, etc. If that doesn't work, BACKUP ALL YOUR DATA, download the QT installer from apple and try to make it reinstall, erasing old files if possible. If that doesn't work, you can try deleting any and all QT files you find and reinstalling from your OS X cd (but I really don't think this will work and you might get into trouble), or do an archive-and-install; this is pretty severe, but QT is deeply entrenched into MacOS and there's not much you can do about it.

Incidentally, QT used to have unexplained strokes like this in OS <=9 from time to time as well, but this is the first time I've heard of it happening in OS X
