OK, I downloaded ccc today, to back up my PB hard drive in preparation for installing Panther.

I let it run -- thinking I'm copying files to an external hard drive I attached to the PB for this purpose. So -- quite some time later, I check. There were some problems with preference files; no biggie. BUT: according to my hard drive, I had only 24 KB left of space, which would indicate everything got copied back to my hard drive. And there's nothing new on the external drive. SO: where's my stuff????? Is it just an image? Where would it be stored? I've tried to find things, but to no avail. The finder is acting wacky. I emptied the trash and miraculously, 15 GB of space emerged.

So -- you CCC users out there, can you help me? And by the way, our Internet connection ONLY works on the PB (Airport Extreme) -- the two other computers in the house (wired) are down. Can this all somehow be connected -- though I can't for the life of me see how.

Help, please...

OK, so I tried a restart b/c my computer is acting very, very strangely. Preferences are now back to out-of-the-box.

And I have no hard drive space!!! Down to less than a gig, so obviously, the hard drive duplicated itself SOMEWHERE. But where.

Can anyone please, please help?

If you have less than 250 MB free on your boot drive, every app you open will have it's prefs reset upon quitting, so don't worry about that.

I've never used Carbon Copy Cloner, but you should be able to look at the interface and find out where you have the backup set to save.

I had it set to save to the external hard drive -- but I don't think that's what happened, given that my main hard drive no longer has any space left.

And the external HD shows no hint of the files either...

Yes, it is an image unless you specified differently. There are several different ways to back up with Carbon Copy Cloner. Re-launch it and click on Preferences. You will see your choices.

I can honestly say I've never, and I mean NEVER seen CCC not copy correctly to it's "Target" pending the Target is working and functioning properly...

Very odd.

Are you sure about that? I could have sworn that CCC by default will make a byte for byte "ditto" copy/mirror of your drive onto the target; however, under Preferences you can make it an ASR image by choosing such prefs...

This depends. If the volumes are the same size, it will do a bitwise copy. If they're different sizes, it will do a file by file copy (otherwise you'd waste space on the target drive).

I just posted a message on the BOmbich forum. In the meantime, I just want to get back to yesterday! Does anyone know wehre on my HD (the powerbook one, which was the source disk) the files might have gone. Obviously, they're there somewhere, because I have no more space. THey must be hidden.

Should I run fsck or something?

And for some strange reason, the Internet is down on the two wired computers but still works on this (AE) one. This all happened within an hour or two, so I must think they're somehow related. And of course, it's all a big pain.

OK, For a 60 gb drive, a whopping 25 plus gigs are in my "user" folder. So I'm thinking things got put in there. ANYONE have any clues? Please, please please?

The easiest way is to just use the find option in the finder. Change the "search for items" section from what is most likely currently set to "name" to "size." I'm sure you can figure out the rest.
