I have an unopened Soundtrack and other than the number of loops (1,000 in GarageBand, 4,000 in Soundtrack), I'm wondering what the difference is between the two apps. I've ordered the new iLife ... will GarageBand be redundant or should I open and enjoy Soundtrack?

Count me in. Unless I'm crazy garabge band is cheaper, but does the same thing that Soundtrack does, plus you can record your own music.
Soundtrack alone cost 299, garabge band cost 49 plus comes with other things.
I just don't get it quite frankly. And that extra pack costs 99 bucks.
I just want to know if I can use garageband to make my own soundtracks to my Final Cut Pro movies w/o actually hooking up a keyboard. Just using samples.
It seems so. Just throw them in and export to iTunes, then use Quicktime Pro to make aiff file, then import into FCP.

Input from other instruments is the largest difference
The Guitar Amps and the Software Instruments that take MIDI inputs.
see intuem.com for a similar program.

Hang on a minute - Soundtrack has a video track that allows you to synchronise your music to hint points in the video. If you want to produce music for a video then Soundtrack is what you need - if you want to just produce music, Garage Band is the app for you.

But...Soundtrack is included in FCP, so you have it already ?

He downloaded FCP4_stripped.dmg.sit so no Soundtrack wasn't included, he didn't want to download the 4 gig loops file.

Soundtrack, if you'll notice, is now only $200 ($170 with edu discount). Basically, Soundtrack is used only for loops sequencing, and it is much better for this than garageband. The loops are shorter and more varied as to allow for greater diversity in your songs. The garage band loops are rather limited and you really can only make so many sounds. With Soundtrack you can change the key and tempo of your song on the fly to change the sound of your song instantly. Obviously, it also has 1000 more loops than GB+Jam Pack.
Where Garageband really shines is the midi instruments and guitar amps. Soundtrack does none of this, so if you're a musician that knows how to play the keyboard or guitar, I would recommend buying Garageband. If you're a non-musician, I'd recommend buying Soundtrack.
Ideally though, you should try and buy both as well as the Jam Pack. The programs compliment each other nicely and together the would expand your options to limitless potential.

Yah I ended up opening Soundtrack and am now using both and having a blast. I'm using the GarageBand loops in Soundtrack too. After working all day, it's really fun to play with the loops.

Can you use Soundtrack loops in GarageBand? Also, can you import a midi file in GB?

Does Soundtrack play well with USB or Firewire based mixers/input devices for multi track recording?

They're just AIFF files. If the Garage Band loops and Soundtrack loops are different, then I'm getting sountrack too!

Oddly enough, I have played with soundtrack, and I own garageband. I personally like the feel of the interface on Soundtrack much better than that of GarageBand. Even though All I am mainly going to do is create music with it, I think I'll be purchasing it. Oh, and maybe it's just me, but Soundtrack 1.2 runs better than GarageBand 1.0 on the same system..
