I have used this excellent free app for a couple of months and am generally satisfied. However, some of my entries are quite big and include pasted web pages and photos, and the whole application takes a VERY long time to start as a result. Anyone would want to add any advice?

NoteBook.

Nice app with good support. Password protection and encryption. An excellent index feature. Clipping service *and* contextual menu to send text snippets and similar stuff into notebook pages from most apps. Select a web page's contents in Safari and send the whole thing over including images. Can even include whole document into notebook pages. (what it does is attach the file into its notebook document which is really a package. I place misc. PDFs in there all the time.) Plus loads more. Worth checking out IMHO.
Sizzling like an isotope.

Hog Bay Notebook might fit the bill more for your needs.

Notebook and Notepad take the 'computer as digital paper' metaphor too far for my tastes.

I actually trialed the Hogbay Notebook a few months ago. I don't remember if you can do an individual entry where the time would be automatically stamped. In other words, would it act as a regular diary/journal?

Also, does it have the "upload to web" feature? Right now, I am not posting anything to the web with MacJournal but I am thinking about starting a blog.

I do remember being impressed with the Hogbay Notebook, I just didn't find the interface simple to use as a regular diary. Should I reconsider?

Aha, in that Hogbay Notebook which I am demoeing again (not too many changes since last time I tried it) there is a way to look at notes by date modified which is sort of close. Still, I want a simpler interface as in MacJournal... Still searching...

Well, MacJournal is in the subject of this topic!

By the way, I am just checking out options in MacJournal and I have to say that nothing currently beats this app for the set of features and the price.

I mistook "MacJournal" for a "Mac journal". My bad.

If you want it as a possible blog, try iblog from lifli.com. Not sure if it would suit your needs, but it's set up kinda like a newsreader, and the output looks like a movable type blog (check my links)

Keep trying with Hogbay - I moved over from MacJounrnal, although I was using it as a notebook rather than a Journal. Hogbay's search feature is very good, and on the whole I'm very pleased with the app. However, I do believe there is a memory leak, as it takes up masses of memory after a while, and drags my whole system down

Yeah, the thing I prefer in MacJournal over HogBay is that MacJournal exports text files as one file - Hogbay exports as multiple text files for each note...
