with Disk Utility? We are talking about 27 GB of data. So that would be about 40 disks - is that possible?

Someone will correct me if Im wrong..but I think Disk Utility makes an image before burning so I think that would mean you would need 27GB free for an image to be made.

DiskBlaze (http://www.radicalbreeze.com/blaze/index.html) doesnt do backups yet, but its easier (and much cheaper) to use than DiskUtility, and not as expensive as Dragon or Toast.

Why would you want to do something like that? why not just back up your important Files. the other stuff can be re-loaded

Russian Mac fan: Try Impression 2.0 - $25

Intego Personal Backup $59.95.

There are many others as well. But some of them do not allow you to backup to CD's. Good luck.

Retrospect.

Get a DVD-R drive or just buy another HD.

If I have a 40GB HD right now and am looking at buying an 80GB HD powerbook some time in the future would it be a good idea to go for an 80GB backup HD ahead of time?

Also, is this the best way to
transfer data to the new powerbook?

I guess my question is: is it pretty much like backupping a Palm/Clie to a memory card and then inserting the card into a new handheld to restore data. Is this a decent analogy?

In other words, if I have a 40GB Ipod or even a 60-80+GB Ipod (when they come out) I can not only sync ITunes and IPhoto data but all other data on my powerbook's HD?

Because this sounds real nice and adds to my wanting to buy a large capacity IPod

Thanks!

Yes, it'll mount like an external firewire hard drive.

Check out cdbkup in fink. Here is a brief description of what it does:

Code:
DHCP:~ user$ cdbkup cdbkup is used to backup Unix filesystems onto CD-R(W)s. It can be used either interactively for large (multi-CD) backups, or non- interactively for higher-frequency (eg, daily) single-CD backups. Usage: /sw/sbin/cdbkup 0-9 [OPTION]... DEVICE DUMPDIR Options: 0-9 Indicates the backup level --help Show this help message -1, --single Burn last disk in single session mode -a, --append Append the backup onto a multisession CD-R(W) -b, --blank Blank all disks before writing (conflicts with -r) -c, --compress=TYPE Set compression to one of gz|bz2|none. Default: gz -e, --exclude=PATH Exclude the specified file or directory -h, --host=HOST Specify the hostname for remote backup -I, --no-iso Don't create ISO images -l, --label=NAME Set the volume label -m, --cross-mp Cross mount points when dumping -r, --recycle Same as -a, but blank the CD-RW first if data won't fit -s, --speed=SPEED Burn at specified speed (default: 2) -S, --cdsize=SIZE Specify the size of the storage media -t, --test Don't burn the CD - just create archive files -w, --workdir=PATH Set working directory (default: /tmp/cdworkdir) -z, --zip-here For remote backups, perform compression locally -V, --version Show version info
I've never actually used it myself (too lazy), so I can't guarantee anything.

The actual homepage of cdbkup is here.

I suspect this does not back up Mac resource forks, so this might not work for a system-wide backup. Still, looks like an interesting utility.

I'd suggest Apple's Backup 2.0 if you have a .Mac account or Retrospect Express. Both with back up to CDR (though you will need a lot of CDs).

Get an internal 100GB HD and an external case. Slightly cheaper than buying an external drive or a DVD-R drive, and much less trouble.

CAN it be done? Probably, but why go through the trouble? That's a lot of CDs, and if one goes bad, you can't back all of it up if you do it as an image. You'd have to make sure that all the files are treated individually so if a CD goes bad you don't lose any chances of backing up the rest.

Or...buy an iPod. There's your backup (seriously).
