When we use iPhoto we can publish our photos to .Mac really easily.
Now it seems we can also use iMovie to quickly share our movies on .Mac
Does it not seem obvoius that the next use for .Mac will be to share our GarageBand musical creations on a .Mac / iTunes combo.
Maybe we will be able to upload our tracks to a 'Users' area of the iTunes Music Store, with any sales given back to us as iTMS credits.
I'm sure Apple could make this work.

.Mac integration should be a "given." I would certainly expect it soon (if it's not already included).
iTMS is another issue. Apple would need the infrastructure (servers, etc) to support the thousands or potential millions of new songs added. They would also have to change the way the store works to provide a secure way for people to add their own content. Then, there are copyright issues. It's your music, so you can do what you want with it, but I imagine there would be some sort of contract with Apple regarding its distribution. Also, what if the employee of a record label (or a recording artist himself) uploaded a song to the store? Surely the record company would be mad at not getting a share of the $.
Of course, maybe they're just waiting to make this the killer feature of GB 2.0.

Does anyone know when iLife is supposed to be available in the Apple retail stores?
I was surprised not to find any discussion of this.

I think the 16th of Januaries
Well, if the record companies have a contract with someone, they have the right to sue said person for said infraction.
It would be easy, you upload a song, choose a genre, and wait for it to be approved and added. Apple won't put up ****, they will have a screening process of course (they will have the people doing it for the right genre's.. no old white guys reviewing RAP). Then, you get 50 cents and Apple get 50 cents or every dollar you sell... see, simple! Man, I could solve every problem! You are the recording label, and that is the agreement you would enter into using said GarageBand/ iTMS service.

I think Steve mentioned specifically during the event at which they released iTunes for Windows, that they didn't want to do that. He said that on other services you can record a song and upload it for $50, and that Apple didn't want to do that.

On the German news service macnews.de someone mentioned that somewhere in the demo given by Steve, there was "Publish to iTunes Music Store" in a menu.
If that is true (somone would have to go through the presetation again) this feature would be great!

Scarcely pausing for breath, Vroomfondel shouted, "We DON'T demand solid facts! What we demand is the total ABSENCE of solid facts. I demand that I may or may not be Vroomfondel!"

If I were Apple, I wouldn't do it. No doubt a few would submit music to which they don't hold the copyright, and I wouldn't want to be in the legal trouble of distributing that.

Wow. I think this thread has just invented the worst job in the world. Can you imagine spending all day every day listening to recordings of talentless kids droning into poor quality microphones over repetitive backing tracks, waiting for the 1 in 1000 which is worth putting in the store? Every day is karaoke night, except you aren't allowed a go, and the singers make up their own songs (to avoid copyright issues). Give me a cage of rats on my head any day!
Barney.

Apple could have a feature where only some sort of GarageBand file was able to be uploaded or something like that. And they'd convert it there not perfect for avoiding copyright violations but better.
But I hope they don't do it, it would really cheapen things. They'd do better to have a community based on it or something where you could upload or add a feature to iTunes where you could upload your own garage band creations and share em for free.

Apple could support an arena for publishing homemade music, where participants get to rate other songs.
Someone somewhere here mentioned the concept of 'rate 30 songs and you get to upload one' or something to that extent.
Then the top rated songs could graduate to iTMS into their special section.
Moderation, filtering, critique, new music - all in one package.

I think this is a great idea. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple had something of this nature waiting in the wings. If they do, I'm sure they want to wait and see if GarageBand is as successful as iPhoto/iMovie/iTunes before it invests is such a service.

if you actually think Apple is going to pay you for anything at all, you need to reexamine the way business works. They already lose money on iTMS, and I'm pretty sure any scheme where you get compensated for your music would make it lose even more money. Also, keep in mind that $.50 every time someone buys your song is probably many times more than what professional artists make.
I think a more realistic possibility is that Apple would let you upload the song to your .Mac homepage. From there anyone could stream the song. That's the way movies you make in iMovie are published, and I wouldn't expect anything more than that.
