Well, the "hack" in Jaguar was to use a version of the Dock from a prerelease version of Jaguar. That will not work in Panther at all.
To get minimize in place functionality, you need to use Unsanity's WindowShade X. It is a "haxie," which, depending on how you view them, is either a good or a bad thing.
I have no problems with them myself; if configured properly, most of the problems they cause can be avoided, without having to resort to disabling them entirely.
