I am trialing a demo of one, but am wondering if there are free (or even open source) ones?

NetNewsWire Lite isn't open source so far as I know, but it is free.

I think Newsmac and Shrook 2 are free.
Also does anyone have an opinion as to which is better? I'm leaning towards Newsmac, but that's because I installed it first and so have played around with it more. Open to suggestions about other ones though...

Shrook has been ruined The interface now stinks (from being one of the better ones), and worse, and doesn't work though my work firewall (it was the only one that did).
NewsMac looks very nice, but again, it refuses to work through the firewall.
If you really want open source, then have a search for Blagg. It's a tiny perl script from the author of Bloxsom

Newsmac works through my college firewall so should in theory work through most (seeing as the lab I use it in blocks most other things!) Its not bad though. Is Blagg any good?

I'm a fan of AmphetaDesk myself, It's browser-based, but they've managed to integrate it fairly well with the Mac. It even respects default browser settings.

You are in Soviet Russia. It is dark. Grue is likely to be eaten by YOU!

Strange. Do you have to provide a password ? NewsMac asked me for a password exactly once, worked through the firewall once - and then never again. Perhaps I'll try ditching the prefs and keychain entry and try again.
Blagg is kind of sweet - you have to pair it up with Bloxsom and a web server, but it's fun in a geeky kind of way.

Another vote for NewsMac I discovered it a couple of weeks again and was very impressed with it, especially with it being donationware and all.
