Just got off the phone with Alsoft. They want $20.90 to ship the 3.1 updater so that DW3 is compatible with Panther! Just spent nearly $80 on this program only 6 mo's ago. They claim this is to cover their shipping costs. Ha!Looks like I'll be selling this on eBay and finding a util company that is more responsive to their customers. Let the bidding begin...

The update to the DiskWarrior application itself is free. Alsoft said at Macworld that they would have a downloadable updater available soon. If you have a brand new computer that isn't bootable with your current DiskWarrior CD (e.g. a G5 or 15" aluminum 'Book), that's the only reason you would need to order a new CD. This has always been the case with all disk utilities whenever Apple releases a new machine.

So why don't they make bootable CD images available for download...

Because then DW would be freeware?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Well, not really. They could (a) still charge a nominal - less than $20 - fee, and (b) restrict download to valid serial numbers.

Even though I have a G5, I'll probably hold off on ordering the upgrade disk... I have an iBook that will boot my original DW3 CD, and I can use the G5's target disk mode via the iBook to do any repairs if necessary.

No...example:

1) Go to web site, purchase software
2) Get e-mailed a serial number/unlock code
3) Go to the link in the e-mail or the web site, enter your code, presented with download page where you can download a bootable CD image or the standard app.

Pretty much the same as any other software you buy online and download...

etc.

Extra protection step for the bootable CD image: when you boot off the CD, it asks for your serial number.

Because it would be at least a couple hundred megabyte download, even compressed. A big company like Apple teamed with Akamai could pull something like that off, but it would be unfeasible for most companies.

That's fair enough. Size usually is the show stopper for these things.

I just called and let them charge me for the new CD.

I am upset, as I purchased it this summer and come September, was unable to use it with my new G5.

Still, its the best there is and $20 is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Thanks for the notice. I just finished downloading and burning a new CD containing the Panther compatible version 3.0.1. All went well
