I'm having to crank up my old faithful PM for page layout for a while. It keeps occupying about 75% of my CPU (700-ish RAM). Even with NO doc open. Is there a fix? When I look in Terminal and run top is shows "True Blue Environment" to be the app sucking up the cpu.

I tried opening SimpleText to see if all Classic apps do that: no - only about 9% of CPU used by True Blue. With NO app open but Classic up, True Blue takes only 2-3% of CPU.

Would someone like to explain True Blue - and what can be done with a Classic app like PM hogging -- I can barely surf in Safari if PageMaker is open in the background.

Not much I don't think. True Blue is the Classic environment, which worked on the idea of cooperative multitasking. This means that an app uses as much processor as it wants (basically) before handing it over to another process. Now OS X uses pre-emptive multitasking, which puts teh control on teh operating system level, making it more efficient and "fair".

Since Pagemaker is running in classic, it's using cooperative multitasking. Sounds to me like there's a bug in Pagemaker that's causing this behavior. You might try rebooting into OS 9 if you can to see if you have the same problem there.

You could try renicing True Blue I guess, to have a higher value. That might help.

It's really a shame that PM in Classic doesn't play nice with memory usage. Anyone know if PM 7.0 is any better? [ Rebooting in 9.2 is not my favorite - although it make PM 6.5 awesomely responsive ]
