I was wondering, what dominated photo editing before Photoshop began its reign?

Nothing...

It's like saying "who mass-produced cars before Ford" Photoshop is the original professional level photo manipulation tool. There are a few others, but it was the most popular.

Photoshop 2.5 is still my favorite release... It was so damn fast - even on a Duo 210. Sure I had to wait for 5 minutes everytime I chose a zoom blur, and forget working at high resolutions, but it was just before they started adding useless features to every revision.

Actually, before Photoshop, Adobe had a program, whose name I do not remember (it was before my time), that was grayscale only.

Believe it or not, I still have Photoshop 1.0 (and it's suprisingly similar to what PS CS looks like today).

And the amazing thing is, that the creators of Photoshop had a terrible time trying to get some software company to buy it and market it, before Adobe reluctantly agreed. ("Who would ever use this?")

As Vogageur stated, Tom Knoll was the original author of what is now called Photoshop (it was called something else, but I forgot) before Adobe purchased it.

I remember using it briefly, along with a program that was so completely cool, and what is now called Quark XPress. (I don't remember the name of that one either).

It was originally developed by John and his brother Tom at Industrial Light & Magic, then adobe bought it from them.

A little article on the history of Photoshop.

And it's name was ImagePro before Adobe got ahold of it.

Digital Darkroom and PixelPaint Professional.

Studio 8 and Super Paint were also on the scene at the time (though not geared towards photo editing).
