my ical shows Jul 17th everytime until I launch the program and then it jumps to the right date. Anyone know how to fix? My search isn't working for some reason so sorry if this is an old issue. Thanks!

There is nothing wrong with your iCal icon, the iCal dock icon doesn't update until the program has run for the first time.

Just how should the application update its dock icon if it doesn't run? This looks pretty logical to me...

I would have been cool if there was a dockling - or whatever itīs called, that always kept the date right and launched iCal when u pressed it (so you donīt have to keep iCal running just to know what date it is..)

Same for Mail.app. I donīt want to keep the app running, but Iīd still like to know when I get mail.

Then simply close the Mail window.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

The iCalHelper application that does all the alerts from iCal could probably be programed to update the icon if Apple wanted to. If you open then quit iCal the dock icon will keep the current date until you Logout.

Yep. This would incredibly simple for them to implement.

Infact, Apple should be embarrassed for prominently displaying the wrong date 99.726% of the time.

iCal works like this too. Launch it and close the window and the date will be correct.

July 17, 2002 was the release date of the first version of iCal... hence the Jul 17 on the icon.

I have iCal in my startup items, set to hide. Thus, whenever I log in, the iCal icon always displays the correct date (and my .mac-linked iCals will always be properly updated).

Put Mail.app in your login items, and check "Hidden" - then you dont have to do ANYTHING!

You can do just that with MailTicker which puts a little email icon in your menu bar that checks your POP email accounts and alerts you when you have new email. It also puts a list of all the new emails listed by sender/subject right in the menubar.
