I don't know where you've been, but MPEG-4 Audio is now the standard encoding method in the latest iTunes. It will play MP3Pro, as will any other regular MP3 player (as it was designed to be backwards compatible to some degree), but it might not play it at the best quality possible.

edit: Audion handles mp3PRO and has a decent enough explanation of the format here

In other words .aac files are based on MP4.

You can actually just turn them off. Go to your User Center, then to Edit Options.

I don't even realize people have them until someone else comments about one. It really is quite a pleasure. I read from work sometimes, and I don't need OMGWTFBBQ junk all over my screen when someone walks in.
