Anyone got a workaround? I have a 733 G4 quicksilver with no dvd drive. Can Garageband be installed onto a machine that does comply, backed up to CD (using Backup) and restored to a non complying machine, for instance?

No, it can't be cacked up to CD because GarageBand is a bout a 2 gig image. If you use .Mac backup you MIGHT be able to. What you could do is convert the DVD to a disk image then transfer it to your machine that has no DVD drive and it will/should install.

Well, if you legally own a copy, I don't see anything wrong with using torrent to obtain a disk image of GB.

I am not sure, but if you check the other GB threads, I think someone said you can find the package for it on the disc and install it from that. Again, I am not sure on this.

I have a Quicksilver 733 too, but I also have an iBook with a DVD drive, which is how I got it on my tower. I installed it on the iBook and connected it in target disk mode via Firewire and transferred the program that way. It only took a few minutes using Firewire. Just remember to include the Garageband files that are placed in Libary/Application Support/Garageband.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but if you can find a friend with an iBook or Powerbook with DVD it is not a long process.

Yes. You can make an image of the installer on a machine with a DVD drive. I did that, put the image on my iPod, copied the image to the machine without any optical drive, and everything installed just fine.

Alternatively, if you don't have an iPod, you could make an image, segment the image into CD size chunks, burn those, and move the DVD image to the CD machine that way.

As long as you have two machines -- one with a DVD drive and one without -- you don't need to mess around with images or tracking down all the installed files. Just put the DVD in the one machine, then connect the two either via FireWire Target Disk Mode or Personal File Sharing, and the machine without a DVD drive will see the disk in the other machine's drive... proceed to install as normal.

This is what I tried first, but it didn't work with my 12" Powerbook G4. I wonder if it's feature of the newest machines only.

I had an 800 MHz QuickSilver machine with the standard 8x CD-RW drive. For $50 (with free shipping) at NewEgg I purchased a 48x CD-RW drive and 16x DVD-ROM drive combo. Works like a charm and installation was extreamly easy.

Might be a good time to get a Combo drive. Anyone else besides Cheespuff get GB to install on a non-OEM drive?

Thanks all for the tips!

I installed iLife on my G4 at work but right before it finished installing there were errors installing (long story short: the heat from the machine was a little too much and there were constant errors)

Anyway I loaded iLife onto the PowerBook G4 ... I bought the Family pack iLife!) and then simply connected the 'Book to the Mac via FireWire Target Disk and transferred them over. Of course I had to make sure that GarageBand's Loops/Sounds were copied to the right spot in the Library folder, and everything worked fine.

Just make sure to repair permissions, it seems there were lots of them corrected when I did so.
