Hey everyone. I have a 1st gen iMac... running OSX 10.2. In os9, everything is fine, in OSX, it is also fine, with one exception. Whenever I play a .mpg with quicktime, it plays in black and white. .Movs play fine, in full color. Basically, I'll double click a .mpg file, and it'll open in its own window. The first frame is in color. But once I hit play, the color just sorta drains out of the movie.
Also, another oddity. If I play TWO movies at once, it's the same. Black and white. HOWEVER, if I drag one movie over the top of another movie, the BACK movie will suddenly change to full color. The front movie, will stay in black and white.
This only happened when I upgraded QT to play the trailers on the matrix website.

that's a strange one. does it help if you resize the window before playing? what about if you move everything out of /System/Library/QuickTime and reinstall QuickTime? what about if you create a new user? fix permissions? Does it do the same thing in the Finder's column mode preview? what about a quicktime-based player like Cellulo?

No, it doesn't matter how I resize it. I just wiped my OSX partition, and did a fresh install of 10.3, so I don't think I'd need to repair permissions to anything...it just does this. >shrug<
Any ideas?

Using a player won't help, as when I'm using iMovie all the footage is now playing in black and white.
I don't know what the finder's column mode preview is, but when I have them in the dock they're full color....
Anyway, I fail to see how these suggestions would help fix this problem.

as with any problem, it exists. somewhere. the first step is finding where. Is it in QuickTime Player, or the underlying framework? is it in your user folder or in the global quicktime files? or is it only in your movie files? how do you propose to answer these questions?
I don't know what the finder's column mode preview is
click on one of the movies in question in the Finder while in column mode, so it shows the movie in a preview box (and click the disclosure triangle if necessary)

Well, unless all you're looking for is an exchange like:
Ca$h: Whine whine whine whine whine whine whine.
Rest of MacNN: Yep, it's borked. Have a nice day.
the end
the most logical first step in fixing a problem is trying to figure out where it actually lies.
But maybe I'm just weird that way.
Have a nice day.
