I'm still learning the Apple system and I am wondering if it is normal for Messenger to "mount" a drive when launched on the desktop? Is there anyway around this? Thanks.

Mac OS X software is often distributed as "Disk Images". Disk images (with extension .dmg) are files that mirror the contents of a disk, and to access their contents they are mounted as virtual white disks on the desktop. Usually you den drag the software out of that virtual disk into the Applications folder (or wherever you like to keep the software), unmount the virtual disk and trash the disk image file.
