So i use iCal all the time, as does my wife. When fast user switching came out, we were very enthused. BUT, we can't seem to find a way to share a calendar. If one of us puts something into iCal, the other one would obviously like to be able to see that under their account, and add to it if nessecary. Is the ONLY way to get this done by getting a .Mac account? If so, seems kinda bogus.

Do this:
1. Create a folder /Users/Shared/Calendars
2. move your and your wife's calendars there. (Change the names from "Home" to "Frumpy-Home" and "Wife-Home" or somesuch.)
3. delete your /Users/Frumpy/Library/Calendars folder, and your wife's.
4. Open the Terminal, and type
ln -s /Users/Shared/Calendars ~/Library/Calendars
5. Do the same from your wife's account.
that should do it.
If you want to not just see one another's schedules, but have one in common (say, a calendar named 'Shared'), then create a new calendar (or copy a blank one), and change the permissions using Get Info so that it is world-writable.

Frumpy what Mithras said is correct. He is only getting you to delete your calendars from your home directory when they have been copied into the shared users folder (just don't miss this step). This is the reason for the shared users folder, it makes it easy(er) for users to share the same itunes library, etc as well.
The step 4 from Mithras creates a symbolic link in your home directory that ical automatically follows to the new shared calendar location.
I don't know of any easier way to do it than via the terminal.
There are alternatives to .mac for ical publishing if you wanted to share this way. See http://www.icalshare.com for lots of ical info. Here is a free host they mention: http://icalx.com/
