Before upgrading to Panther a few weeks ago, I had backing up down, using a CMS drive with its ABS backup software (fortunately, I never needed to boot up from that drive, because it turns out I was using the wrong version of the software! But it did work to back up all the files and I never had trouble trying to copy the files and then run into problems with permissions.
The software doesn't work with Panther, though -- and in looking on the CMS web site, it APPEARS I'd have to upgrade to a new software (and that will cost 60 bucks, I think it was). And even worse, to my way of thinking, I'd have to erase the drive, first. I use that drive not only for backing up but also for extra storage. ORganization wise, it's a bit of a mess. I could move everything to a new drive and start over, but I'm pondering my options:
• Buy the upgrade, erase the drive and start over. It's great software by the way, and works quite well.
• Use CCC, which from all reports works well and is very inexpensive to boot. I'd still have organization issues with my drive, though, in order to be able to find my backups, easily.
• Buy Retrospect when the new version comes out.
• Backup from Apple -- so far that's worked very poorly. I'm running into lots of permission problems.
Any thoughts? None are without issues. Right now I'm backing up documents on CD. I really liked the simplicity of the ABS software, though.
