I have an old .avi movie that won't play with Mac OS X and QuickTime 6.5 Pro. I have installed the MPEG-2 codec that I purchased from Apple. However, when I start up Classic and use QuickTime from my OS 9 Applications folder the movie plays perfectly. Whatup with that?

Some codecs (notably the Intel Indeo ones) do not exist for OS X that did exist in OS 9.

You will have a codec in OS 9 which is no available in OS X. You can go into Classic mode, open the movie and then export using a codec which is present for both the OS 9 and OS X versions, something like Sorensen.

Then it should work in OS X also.

The Indeo codecs are old, nay ancient. I have not seen an avi video encoded with Indeo since the year 2000!

Where do people dig up stuff like that!

(I'm curious rambo47 what is this video of and where did you get it?)

Divx Doctor is only for converting the VBR MP3 soundtracks that Quicktime has problems with, so in this case it probably wouldn't help.

some digital cameras unfortunately produce AVI movies with Indeo compression. Could still be porn I guess

Not porn, it's the "Farting in Bed" short. I don't know from whence it came but it's been lying around the hard drive on one of my Macs. It's a 1.7 MB file and I put it on my homepage: http://homepage.mac.com/rseijas

yeah, that's Indeo version 3.2. The ffmpeg clan is working on an Indeo 3 decoder (god knows why); it's not ready yet but sometime in the future VLC may be able to decode this specimen. Probably a few weeks after you decide you don't care anymore and throw it out.
