OK, first of all, I did search and did find that there have been many problems with Palm following a Panther install.
I got my desktop version working right away and have been congratulating myself on avoiding the woes of others -- UNTIL I tried to hotsync. I have been completely unable to do so -- just get the screen (on my handspring) saying it's connecting to the desktop. But it never does. I've tried making sure I had the hot sync manager in the library spot (it wasn't). But I get nothing under "connections," so I'm not sure I've solved anything. I've tried running pseudo. That didn't seem to do anything.
Any ideas? Now -- after moving the library item back into my system folder, I haven't restarted the computer, though I did restart the program. Could that be the problem? And if not -- anyone have any ideas? As I said, I did do a search, but I've tried many of the workarounds, and nothing seems to be working.
Hmmm, this could be what gets me to switch to ical!

Sorry this is not much of an answer but I got good tips with my own hotsync problems (different to yours) over on the Brighthand forums (they have a dedicated board). Good luck!

Did you install the latest version of Palm Desktop for Mac? I just set up my wife's new iBook to iSync with her Handspring, and it went very smoothly. The only bobble was that her user name on the iBook wasn't exactly the name on the Handspring. Once I deleted the first profile I set up, it almost instantly found the Handspring and it's been perfect ever since.

They haven't come up with a new version for a while, have they?
I think my trouble is that, since I DIDN'T install it, just dragged things over from an external drive, I don't have everything in the right spot. I'm going to do a dedicated search what is where, and see what I'm missing. I think that might solve my difficulties.

Palm Desktop puts a bunch of stuff all over the place. /Libray/Applications Support, ~/Library/Application Support, and also /Library/CFMSupport are the main ones, besides ~/Documents.

Thanks -- I found its various pieces (I still have older versions -- hmmm, guess I should remove them...) and managed a hot sync. What was really weird is that the "hot sync manager" had lost its icon and had taken on the icon for a completely different program (quickeys).
Any idea what THAT'S about?

To install Palm Desktop on Panther (to get around the bug in the Palm Desktop installer, which fails on Panther if not run as root):
1. Remove/uninstall the existing installation of Palm Desktop.
2. Use NetInfo Manager to enable the root user.
3. Log in to the computer as root.
4. Install a fresh copy of Palm Desktop 4.1 using a fresh download of the installer.
5. Log out of root, and log back into your normal account.
6. Use NetInfo Manager to disable root.
