While everyone else is reporting how much they like Safari 1.2, I haven't been able to launch it successfully even once since installing it on a brand new G5 running 10.3.2.
I've tried downloading and installing it 3 times (deleting Safari and its cache and preferences between each reinstall).
I've repaired permissions, run fsck, deleted preferences, but it still crashes on loading its default home page ( http://apple.netscape.com/apple.adp )
The crash log says "Thread 0 crashed":

It sounds like there's something broken besides Safari. Like maybe there IS something wrong with an OS file. Unfortunately, I don't know of a tool that will diagnose that sort of thing. We updated both Panther and Safari at the same time, and though it took a while, everything went beautifully.
I have heard that some people have had problems with upgrade installations of Panther (in general, not necessarily related to Safari), and that leads me to believe that there are some files or components that are "fragile."
One thing you don't mention is whether you restarted your computer between removing a previous install try and the next attempt. If you hadn't tried this so far, I would methodically remove everything about Safari, shut down the computer and let it sit a few minutes, then restart and try again. If it still fails, the next step is the OS.

Yup, got the same thing on my 17" powerbook. I used software update to install java 1.4.2 & safari 1.2 at the same time & while safari seemed to install OK, java had prmissions issues. Then software update quit unexpectedly every time it was launched so I downloaded (on my G4 1.25 DP) & installed java manually. This seems to have fixed software update but now safari is hosed! My 1.25 DP & 800 Titanium updated without a problem.
I've tried rebuilding permissions, repairing the hard drive booted from the panther CD, running diskwarrior & deleting caches & prefs, all to no avail. Crash message is very similar to yours so I won't bother posting it unless requested.
Any suggestions gratefully received!

Yes, exactly like me! My software update no longer works right after installing Safari either; it crashes when I try to reset ignored updates. It thinks Safari is installed so won't download it, yet it doesn't list it in the list of installed updates.
GHPorter, yes, I did restart between reinstalls. I also logged in as a different user and still couldn't get Safari to launch without quitting.
Guess I have to reinstall the OS. I wish I knew what went wrong.

Have you guys tried dragging the "Safari" folder out of...
Macintosh HD/Users/User_Name/Library
...to the desktop and relaunching Safari? Maybe something happened and corrupted your bookmarks or something.
Any luck?

This version of Safari will not work with 10.3.2. 10.3.3 is required.

Yes, that makes sense. I guess I have to reinstall the system, and forego upgrading to Safari 1.2. I wonder if I also shouldn't bother to upgrade to 10.3.2.
This is a new G5, hardly used. Apple's software should work on it.

I'm experiencing a slightly different problem. Safari seems to slow down over time for what ever reason. I have to quit Safari and restart to achieve normal operation. But even a restart doesn't seem to allow it to operate normally. When I try to type in a website that I try to visit, it seems a bit sluggish in the way it will fill in the remainder of the website. Has anybody else experienced this problem?

A wise man by the name of Chris Habiq over on the Apple discussions (safari) suggested rerunning the 10.3.2 update. I deleted the safari App, prefs & caches then reinstalled the update & safari 1.2 & it all works fine now.
Just save your bookmarks if you don't use isync!
The thread is "safari 1.2 won't atart up" (my link won't work as I'm logged in)

cal6n,
I got my Safari 1.2 to work also, but by reinstalling 10.3 (archive and install, preserve user settings), deleting every trace of Safari, restarting, and reinstalling Safari 1.2
I also removed Norton Anti-Virus 9.01, just on a hunch that its Autoprotect feature may have screwed up Software Update (which stopped working after using it to download the Safari update).
Software Update is working again and I've updated back to 10.3.2.

Okay, just a follow-up to this problem that might help others. I'm pretty sure the problem is caused by a conflict between Safari 1.2 and Norton Anti-Virus 9.01. After reinstalling 10.3.2 and Safari 1.2, Safari was working fine. I tried a number of web pages restarted the computer a few times, still Safari continued to work just fine.
Then for kicks I reinstalled NAV 9, and right away upgraded to the Panther compatible v9.01. Restarted, tried to launch Safari, and the quit-on-launch problem was back.
Just removing NAV and Safari, then reinstalling Safari and restarting is not enough to fix the problem. I have to also reinstall 10.3!

NOTE TO SELF: Do not install NAV 9.0.1...are you worried of viruses anyway? Just wondering.

Gorickey, my boss wants anti-virus software on our Macs. I know there are next to no viruses for OS X, so I guess I'll just forego the protection on our Macs running Panther till Norton provides an update that plays nice.

Glad you're sorted now. An archive & install was my next port of call. I'm releived I didn't need it!
I also removed Norton Anti-Virus
Norton's been banished from macs since 10.2.2 as far as I'm concerned. Diskwarrior rox!

I am not. I guess I just threw that out there, just incase someone starts having problems. I should have been more elaborate.

Not to muddy the waters on this issue, but we're running NAV 9.0, updated at least weekly, and our Safari (and OS X.3.2) upgrade went perfectly. I don't know if this is significant, but we've only had the computer for about three weeks, so maybe we haven't touched enough configurations, added enough apps (we've only added Office X), or something, to get to some critical point that hoses things up.

That's very interesting, and now I'm inclined to agree that it's not NAV.
I initially thought it might be NAV 9.01, because removing it, and reinstalling the system fixed the problem, and the problem returned immediately when I reinstalled NAV.
Now here I am setting up another identical brand new G5 dual 2GHz, and I am having the SAME problem with Software Update and Safari 1.2 quitting on launch after downloading Safari, and this time I don't have NAV on the machine at all!
This time the problem cropped up after I installed new RAM. WTF? I am baffled!
Here is all that has been installed in this new machine:
Updated to 10.3.2, Safari 1.2, Java 1.4 whatever
MS Office and its updates
EndNote 7
AppleWorks 6.2.9
Adobe Acrobat 5
Printer driver for GCC laser printer
1 GB RAM
And that's it!
