There is software out for the PC called "Guitar Pro" - it essentially is a way to read files that have tablature and what looks like perhaps MIDI as well in there.
Here is the website: http://www.guitar-pro.com

Is there an equivalent software piece for the Mac? I mainly just want something that will let me read the many readily available files that are all over the web that are designed for that software - I think they are in "gp3" format.

The company that makes Guitar Pro seems to only support Windows.

I use Harmony Assistant.

You can open any MIDI file, and convert it to any kind of tablature.

It works great in conjunction with GarageBand.

It can import a lot of different tab file types (unfortunately, I don't see gp3 as one of them).

Check out the demo...
The full version is pretty cheap with free upgrades for life. I bought it years ago.

For MIDI->tab, there is also G7, or Sibelius. But G7 crashes a lot in Panther.

Logic can also display guitar tab.
