I have a part time job at a computer center, and we have a person who is claiming that his mac has the MYDOOM virus. What do you think? Are they nuts? As far as I know the virus is windows only, and there is no way that it could run on a mac unless you have a PC emulator that gets it.

They're full of crap. They're probably receiving bounced e-mails or e-mails that say, "You have the MyDOOM virus."

yep. he might just be overreacting. a mac can get the mydoom virus...but it cant infect it. as the prev poster stated he is probably getting a bounced back message saying he has it. so someone that has his email in their address book (and is on a windows machine) has it. it spoofed his email address.
so yeah...he may in fact have it in his inbox...but its not hurting anything. now if he manually sends that out to a pc user and they are dumb enough to open it (god why are pc users so damn dumb and gullible) then that would be bad.

The worst is the manual viruses that ask the users to manually erase their drive and then reboot...

I have not had any users that bad yet... Of course, I do more hardware repair than user help. I just speak up when the user consultants get a mac question and have no idea what the answer is. If I did user consultanting I would be too tempted to say "User error; replace user and press any key."

Anyway, I thought that this was the case with the mydoom virus, but figured that I had better make sure before saying something (has anyone come up with a virus that hits both mac and win M$ office or the like?). Thank's

I work in Tech Support and get calls about virii all of the time. Sometimes I wish we could just delete the user instead of the email

Tell them to open the Terminal and type:
Code:
ls /antivirus/delete/MyDoom
If it comes back saying "file not found" or anything, then not only have you gotten rid of the virus, but you have made yourself forever immune to it, and you can ignore any further e-mails saying that you might have it; they will be wrong.

OK, so it's a placebo effect, but if it makes them feel better...

On the macro virus front: yes, the Office suite on Macs are susceptible to macro virus written on PC's, however the only truly damaging macro viruses I have ever seen all try and write things to the "C:" drive, and unless you have a whimsical name for your hard drive, chances are you have nothing to fear.

I have seen a few that mess around with the default templates, and have been a pain to clean up.. but no actual damage.
