I just finished editing a movie in iMovie 4 and exported it in QuickTime's Full Quality DV format. The movie has .dv on the end. I burned it on a CD and gave it to a friend with a PC. He has the free QT player on his PC, but he says that his computer does not recognize the format.

I thought this was both Mac/PC compatible? Can someone help with this? Would manually changing the ending make a difference on his PC? Any recommendations or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I just tried opening a .dv file on my PC and it opened the file just fine. I do have the pro version of QT on my Win2K box so that may be the difference.

Quicktime's DV format does work in Quicktime for Windows. I've tested this personally myself. I too have Quicktime Pro so maybe that is the reason it works.

Another interesting thing: Windows users who use Windows MovieMaker 2 can export their video in a sort of DV/AVI format and that format is totally compatible with iMovie. I wasn't expecting that to work but it does.

So, is QT Pro required to view movies encoded in DV format? Surely (hopefully!) that wouldn't be the case

I don't think that's the case. I just installed QT on my Virtual PC Windows and the DV file I created played just fine (just fine meaning quite a bit of stuttering and stopping b/c of the emulation, but I did see video and hear sound). Something is up with your friends QT install. Has he updated it to 6.5?

That might very well be the problem. He mentioned he probably had an older version of QT. Hopefully an upgrade to 6.5 will take care of the problem.

I have to chime in and say that DV files work perfectly on PCs. I've done many of them myself to test different MPEG-2 encoders.
