My prayers were answered today when I discovered SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) software and a tiny app called Scanner 1220U. Read more about SANE at
http://www.sane-project.org/

Then d/l and install the packages you need from
http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/

and finally d/l the Scanner 1220U app at
http://www.geo.uu.nl/~kool/software.shtml

Yes the Scanner 1220U is very primitive, but it works and gives us hope. No the TWAIN-sane option using Graphic Converter did not work for me, neither did anything from the command line in the Terminal app.

Please do not bother the developer of Scanner 1220U as this app is not supported. Please contact me if you are knowlegable enough to enhance the app, the source code is avaiable at the site. I persaonally just installed the developer tools that came with Panther - naive perhaps but I'd like to add a preview mode and more.

Running Mac OS X since Public Beta.

This comes years too late for most of us. Curse Umax! I've moved on now but but this is still good news.

Hmm... I picked up a 1220U from my dad a year ago. It still works. I will try and see what I can do with the software too...

Anybody still using Twain Sane w/ a UMAX 1220U?
http://www.sane-project.org/man/sane-umax1220u.5.html for individual driver conf help.
http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/
I just installed libusb, SANE backends, SANE Preference Pane, and TWAIN SANE Interface with no success. Here is my conf file at /usr/local/etc/sane.d/umax1220u.conf :
# Autodetect the UMAX Astra 1220U
usb 0x1606 0x0010

# The following line enables autodetection for the
# Astra 2000U and Astra 2100U. However, this driver
# isn't entirely compatible, so expect color problems
#usb 0x1606 0x0030
#usb 0x1606 0x0130

# device list for non-linux-systems (enable if autodetect fails):
/dev/scanner
/dev/usb/scanner0

Terminal gives invalid argument error when I scanimage > test.pnm
No luck with with GraphicConverter or Image Capture.
Any suggestions would be great, although I might just have to finally go buy a cheap new one.
