Anyone know what happened to my Key Caps? I seemed to have lost it. Seriously, is Key Caps not part of Panther???

Key Caps app is no longer in Panther. This especially annoys CharlesS.

You can add something similar via System Preferencess->International->Input Menu->Keyboard Viewer and then open this via the input menu.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

No, Key caps in no longer part of the OS
The functionality has been rolled in to the 'international keymap menu' (the flag shaped menu item) on the right hand end of the menu bar.

If you still have 10.2 lying around somewhere, you can use the Key Caps.app from it just fine on Panther, btw.

What's the difference between the old Key Caps and the new one under International? They seem the same to me, except that the new one is a floating window that can be directly used in any application...?

Hmm, I didn't realize I was getting this well-known around here.

It's annoying as hell that we have to enable the keyboard viewer in the International pref pane, because there's no way a newbie is going to be able to figure that out on his own, and thus one of the best things about the Mac, the characters you can get with the option key, becomes a power-user only tool since they are the only ones who will know about it.

Myself, what I did to fix it was to use my app, Pacifist </shameless plug> to extract Key Caps.app from the 10.2 install CD's. But Apple really ought to be leaving Key Caps as part of the default installation. What's it take up, 150K?!

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Oh, you're right in that sense, I suppose. I like the new floating-window functionality, but it is in a really random place.

I was thoroughly pissed when I thought Key Caps was deleted from OS X; at least, even if it is harder to get to, it's still there.

For people that don't read MacNN regularly, it's gone.

That is true, and that is very sad.
