VPC Crashing

I'm running VPC 5 (Connectix version) with Windows XP on a G4 OS 9.2.1.
I use the Share Folders feature to access Mac files on my computer. If I share small folders as separate drives in XP containing relatively few documents, VPC acts normally, allowing me to view and select the contents in the My Computer display.
However, if I share a large folder containing many subfolders and documents as a separate drive appearing in My Computer, selecting that folder to display its contents freezes the computer. The hourglass appears, everything locks up, and I have to reboot.
It acts like a memory shortage problem, but I have increased VPC's memory and checked the virtual memory settings in XP, which appear to have plenty of room.
Has anyone seen this behavior and/or have any solutions to suggest

How much RAM do you have? XP really needs 256MB allocated to it to run well, then how much is left to run OS9? Also, any other application on the Mac open and running at the same time (close all down except VPC)?

I think 256 is too low for XP to run well. Bump it up, if you have the ram to spare that is.

I have 384 MB of RAM. The XP that came with my copy of VPC seems to be emulating a PC with 128 MB RAM. Its virtual memory settings show 192 MB min and 384 max. How/where would I bump up XP's RAM?

My XP runs very well set at 256MB, never uses virtual memory. There's really no benefit allocating more RAM, since you’re only ever emulating a Pentium II with Trios video card (current VPC design specs). Tested XP speeds with 256, 384 and 512MB assigned were identical. Better to use the RAM to run OSX without ever having to page-out, THAT's when VPC slows to the legendary crawl. But that's with OSX.
For VPC OS9, the RAM allocated to the Windows OS is set when the drive image settings are created. They can be changed when the drive image is shut down.
The RAM allocation the original poster just described is the VPC application's RAM, which doesn't need to be set any higher, the default settings are fine. Try changing the RAM for VPC to default, and assigning more RAM to the drive image.
IMHO, 384MB total RAM is just too small for VPC to run smoothly, the freezes described would be easily resolved with adding more RAM to the Mac.

I found the XP drive image and increased its RAM to 256, which did seem to improve its performance, but not entirely eliminate the freezing up. Maybe more total RAM in my computer is the answer.
Curiously, VPC runs better when I have booted into OS X rather than OS 9. Maybe the newer system handles memory more efficiently.
