There must be at least 10 of these iTunes controlling add ons, none of which satisfy my needs. I have Synergy, which has a good floater but I want to pick songs out of my playlists using the menu bar (which M-beat does).
Can't we have one controller to rule them all?

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

I use X-Tunes. good enough for me, and it doesn't use any screen/menubar real estate.

Thank You! Just like Krypton, I've always wanted a simple utility that lets me control iTunes without all that bloat crud. X-Tunes doesn't let you go to playlists buts it's very simple and easy to use. Though I still like having the controls in the Menubar, it looks cool.
XTunes just became even more fun to use as I assigned it with the use of one of my buttons on my Logitech MX700 mouse via USBoverdrive. Thanks Again!

Anyhow, surely people agree that very few developers have taken the time to plan out what features people want in such an app, instead of just making it up as they go along.

Hmmmmmm, turns out Synergy Advance (in development at the moment) could be the answer to my quest

Hmm.
I would wager that a lot of developers create these things for themselves at first, then choose to make their work available to others…

Not much, right now it just sits there and displays the current song

i've been using 2 great apps...
itunes track gives me artist/song titles on the desktop (i've got a "windowless" display, ie just text;
and imote, which gives me keyboard control (at any time, no matter what app i'm running), and is otherwise "invisible"; i can start, stop, go to the next tune, change volume, etc.
a perfect combo!

Menu Tunes
This is definitely the best of the bunch, although it doesn't read songs in its playlist sub menu... sigh

The default one is perfect for me...just kind of bulky.

Konfabulator with Itunes bar is the answer to my prayers - I tried them all (Synergy included). ITunes bar can have an option of showing Arist and song name without the radiostation description when playing online radio streams.

That's exactly what I use. A new skin just came out for it which makes only the text and control buttons visible. So you only have the track name and info on the left corner of the screen, and volume and playback controls on the right corner all of which only takes up the bottom 10 pixels or so of your screen. It works perfectly, with keyboard controls as well.
