Did Apple plan an iPhoto 3 but change to 4? Do a search in help viewer and you will find this:

What's new in iPhoto 3

iPhoto is the essential tool for organizing and sharing your digital photo collection. With iPhoto 3, you can:

***Select only those pictures you want added to your library when importing photos from a digital camera

***Quickly create and switch between multiple libraries to better organize your photos

Share your photo library and albums between computers over a local network

Quickly display only your most recent photos or film rolls

Adjust the color balance and add lighting effects to individual photos

Select rating points for each picture so you can see your favorite photos at a glance

***Quickly create search criteria for finding any photo by date, film roll, ranking, or text</b>

Create Smart Albums that are automatically updated as your library changes

Choose from a number of artistic treatments and new book styles to create customized albums

Use new .Mac HomePage templates when publishing an album to the web

Choose from several types of slide transitions and select an entire iTunes playlist for your background music when creating a slideshow

For more information, visit the iPhoto website at www.apple.com/iphoto.

Are some of the features even stated here even available in 4? Like the ones marked with *** ?

I know "Image Capture" can do this...but can iPhoto '04? If so, how?

It's rather like the former, Mozilla/Netscape 4 ---> 6 transition (no Netscape 5): they just skipped a version number for convenience, and to keep their browser up to date with the other, most important one (Internet Explorer 6).

I really hate it when software developers do that. Gah. Version numbers are there for a practical reason. They used to be anyway until Microsoft, Adobe, Apple ad infinitum screwed that scheme up.

Why don't the just friggin' start at version 7!!!

(oh they did that with Mac OS X )

This is not correct. There was a Netscape 5 in development. It was based off the old legacy 4.x code. However, it was abandoned in favor of their new open source Mozilla project which was the basis of Netscape 6/7.

Apple skipped an OS version way back in the day, too right? I think there was no System 3 or 4, I forget which.
Version numbers are just arbitrary, anyway. There are some conventions that most companies follow, but the numbers themselves mean nothing.

actually what's important here is not the number, but the fact that some of the features planned were cut from the final release...
