So, for the sake of argument, let's say that I have a system with no cd burner and I want to be able to write files from itunes to a disk image, to later transfer and burn. Is there a way I could set up a virtual cd drive to do this, similar to the way you can set up a virtual printer to generate postscript?

I'm not really sure as to what you're enquiring. If you're wondering about how to create a disc image, just use Disk Utility (or Disc Copy if you're in 10.2). There is no such thing as a virtual CD drive.

I doubt it, iTunes doesnt read disk images at all. It only gets its input from the actual CD drive.

If you mount the image it reads it. I not 100% sure if it's like that with Disk Copy-created images but it is like that with Toast Images that are mounted.

You need to make an image as a "DVD/CD Master" not a normal disk image.
