aMSN

Yes it's Carbon, yes it looks just like MS Messenger for Mac, however, it actually works and displays buddy icons and supports file transfer. Not as nice as Adium, Fire or Proteus but it is feature complete.

Gonna check it out...

Although things are brewing on the Proteus and Adium side, I believe, which might put aMSN back into the ugly hole where it came from (is it that ugly? ok, I'll go check it out).

To my knowledge both Adium and Proteus are not ports from the Linux side, whereas aMSN is and thus that is why it has the GUI that even though I haven't used it, probably looks more Linuxish and the feature set that includes stuff that Adium and Proteus aren't able to do yet. I'm going off of the information the author mentioned about aMSN in the feedback on VT so please correct me if I'm wrong.

you know what, it strikes me as odd that no one else has done this yet.
This program works, and it works well. It has implemented everything lacking from the other programs I've used (Proteus, Fire, MSN) and I no longer have to make up excuses when my friends ask me to check out their pictures, or to accept a file transfer.
For that, I am grateful.

don't forget you can change the skin!!

Wow, this has totally replaced Microsoft's MSN. Totally.

**ZERO** problems with it so far, works well except some GUI glitches

Thank god someone ported this, I've been waiting for something like this since msn 6 was released for PC.

I luve it. It's only v. 0.90 something so it's really promising. And it comes with a good language pack as well. My native included. Yeha!

Can't use it on a 800*600 screen because the save button is not visible in the preferences panel and I need to change the connection method because I'm using a proxy connection....

So, anyone up to make a nice theme for it? Im using Tux at the moment. Im not sure that illl keep using this tho once the new Proteus is out with user pics/file transfer, this app is very cool, and used it a while back on Linux, but due to it being TK based, I doubt it will ever be very mac like at all.

I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

point is Mac OS X has built-in support for pretty much every file format out there ... so, again, why not use it instead of having to download additional 9megs.

Hell, it's WAY faster and less buggy than MSN for Mac which is not ported from Linux, but SUPPOSED TO BE OS X NATIVE.

Microsoft is ********ting us, it all makes sense now.

Adium and Proteus are both going to be running on libgaim in their next iterations. So the goodness of Linux (good open source commandline program) and an OS X interface.

libgaim actually has an interface on Linux, it's Gaim.

I want to see some Proteus/Adium animosity!

From the download page:
"About the FTP:
Please remember that passive mode needs to be enabled for most users, Internet Explorer has this option disabled by default so I recommend using a real FTP Client."

I changed my user agent to Mozilla, and clicked the FTP for mac os x and it began downloading...

I downloaded it, but I canèt get it to do anything but bounce around in my dock for a couple of seconds......

EDIT: I tested the link and itès not working, so you have to go to http://www.dmsn.nl/ and then to their downloads page and follow the above instructions.

To get dMSN working you will need to go

here: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/greg.macosx/dMSN.htm

and download the launchers. I installed both the dMSN launchers there.

EDIT: to get it to look a lot nicer, set the skin to Java/OS X

i haven't played with dMsn very much, but from first impression, i'll be sticking with aMsn.
However, I like that they're working on video chat abilities...that's promising.

I think I'll stick with the official client until 1.0 of aMSN comes out. I keep missing messages from people, they show up in the dock but when I bring 'em up they are totally blank.

also, yeah dMSN is alright, but i rather aMSN, but ill echo the sentiment about them working on webcam support in dMSN, and that being a good thing!

missing messages? weird. "cause prior to getting aMSN that was an issue for me with Proteus. So maybe it's an MSN wide problem 'caue a lot of friends have mentioned it being a problem too.

with the acutal MSN, the dock icon would bounce whenever someone said anything. Now it doesn't, so I forget to check and everyone leaves me. But the support of Display Pics is wonderful.

The only problem I have with aMSN is that when I chat with someone on the Wintel PC and they are typing in a different language ex: Chinese, the font becomes unreadable, as it becomes all messed up and square boxes with a X inside the box. So, this is why I can't use aMSN just yet... MSN from Microsoft doesn't have this problem as the chinese font text from the Wintel people's MSN comes through perfectly. I guess it's back to the old MSN from Microsoft until people at aMSN fixes this...

Good find. It's much snappier than the vile official "native" client. The only drawback (already mentioned)... it doesn't dock bounce so it's easy to miss messages.

This shows that Microsoft MacBU is full of horse hair! Some how everyone can make snappy Mac products except them: browsers, messenger clients...

I am able to send and recive files with MSN 3.5.1 however if both of you are behind a router you are unable to send/recive to that person. Is there a way to get around this?

When using aMSN you cant use
command + H to hide or use, command + ` to switch between the open windows... This is reallying irritatin. And it doesn't have alot of like stuff like, dragging ppl to different groups, dragging and dropping pictures from the finder to send them. Only thing it adds is to tell you when someone leaves a chat window, that is very cool... Shows who doesn't want to talk to you

dMSN allows you to see people msn picture with out installing some stuiped extra picture magic stuff.
