I recently bought an iMac with OSX 10.2.7 for my home.
Up until recently, I only used Classsic 9 at my job. (Quark... you know)
WELL I can't seem to get all the fonts to print smoothly or appear smooth onscreen.
What do I need to do to use the other fonts?
I'm a graphic designer attempting to set up a freelnace operation at home, and only being able to use like 10 fonts is crippling...

what kinds of fonts? It sounds like you only have bitmaps installed?
You can change the settings for on-screen smoothing in the SystemPreferences --> Appearance, but they should print cleanly if they're TrueType or Postscript fonts.
OS X will eat Mac and Windows fonts, as well. They need to be in either your home/Library/Fonts folder, in /Library/Fonts, or in your Classic (OS 9) system's Font folder.

If you bought the machine used, I suggest you format the disk and do a clean install of the operating system.

They are PostScript... and the machine was brand new... The fonts that came with the machine appear smooth... it's the PostScript fonts I (ahem) "borrowed" from my work that are bitmappy... but I will try the placement suggested and report back... Thanks 1000x...

sphereic harlot... you said

But when I open System Preferences (OSX 10.2.7) there is nothing called Appearences...
There is something called "General" under "personal" but the type adjusting thingie there does nothing for the "borrowed" fonts

Are you SURE you have the Postscript files and not just the bitmaps?

I got 'em from Adobe Type on Call... there's a font suitcase and attendant PostScript font files... They work in Classic 9... Are there new fonts for 10 only???
(how long has it been since 10.3 was intro'd anyway... am I a caveman???)

No new font format AFAIK, just greater compatibility with various types of fonts.
Okay, so where did you put these files?
And Panther has been out since September.

Well I tried using the suggestion above about Library > Fonts... Do I need suitcase? Adobe ATM smoothed my fonts in Classic 9 and earlier...
Although I have years of Mac use, I only started messing with OSX 10.2.7 when I bought the iMac in Januray...

You shouldn't need Suitcase.
I'm out of my depth wrt fonts, and this is the only thing I could find that might be relevant:

Good luck!

In OS 9, didn't postscript fonts require two files? One was the postscript data and the other was for the bitmap previews. Maybe you only copied the bitmap files.

Were the fonts on a PC at work? That could be the problem.

Maybe if you didn't have both sets of files? I suppose it's conceivable that if you have a bitmap and postscript version of your fonts, the bitmap might be chosen, though I don't know why this would be the case.

Well you never know. Some employers have no concern for the desires of the employees, even professionals.
I don't have any more ideas, then, unless you're fonts somehow got corrupted. Perhaps you have ATM Deluxe still running on an OS 9 machine somewhere. If I remember correctly, it can check postscript font files for corruption.

If you bought it new in January, it really should have come with 10.3 pre-installed. However, as it didn't, you are entitled to get updater disks from Apple for about $20 USD equivalent although I'd be tempted to go back to the shop where you bought it and ask them about getting a free upgrade.

Actually I got it in late Dec via MacMall and it was affordable to me... probably cause they were 10.2.7... I bought it with the last of my money right after I got fired, in an attempt to have a newer computer at home... I only had a PowerMac at the time... did all my freelance at work after hours...
BUT nevertheless, fonts must have worked in 10.2.7, right???
