I have been doing some research on how to back up my DVD into a SVCD. But I am not quite sure how to do it and if there are applications that do this for Mac.

Thanks.

And you'd want to do this...why?

I never understood the need to pay $17 for a DVD and then make a sh*tty quality "backup" of it.

oh. well if you've never understood something we should all stop doing it. After all yours is the richest lifestyle imaginable, the paragon of all human behaviour, past and future, what with the clever jabs on the the internet message board and the delicious uses of asterisks and cursing. Uh, huh.

Or....it could be that I take care of what I own so I don't need to make a backup.

Not to mention the lack of capitalization some folks are willing to use in public

and it could be that you'd want to keep a copy at the beach house, or in the kids' room, or you don't want to have to baby your discs because it's just not necessary, or you got your wedding reception transferred to DVD and you want to give copies to relatives who don't have DVD players (or you want cheap copies to give to relatives you don't really like)...

Which goes back to my original point - why make a BAD backup?

DVD burners are cheap. DVD players are cheap. DVD-ROM drives are even cheaper. Who wants to "back up" something to a crappier format?

(dependable) DVD media is not cheap, especially if you're making a lot of copies. Add to that CD writers are a lot faster than DVD writers (and cheaper). And if you're giving out movies to people you don't want to have to say "if you want to watch this you have to buy a $75 DVD player." And for VCD I would agree with you that it's not worth your time, but SVCD is closer in quality to DVD than it is to VCD. And a lot of people will just be watching it on a 25" television, where the extra resolution of DVD over SVCD is lost anyway (or they may be children, who can't tell the difference even on an HDTV).

or, maybe you're going on a trip and you want to fit as many movies on your hard drive as you can so you don't have to bring around a bunch of discs.

and while we're asking questions, why would you ever want to "back up" a movie on film (or DV) to the crappier format of DVD in the first place?

Or...the term "backing up" is being used rather loosly .

so your entire objection is because he said "back up" instead of "rip" (which is also ambiguous)? how would you have phrased the original question?

However ... converting to SVCD usually involves calling several programs. An easy to use solution would be ffmpegX or directly using MJPEG tools in the terminal.

It exports to the following codecs:

DIVX
XVID
MS Mpeg4
MS Mpeg4 v1
MS Mpeg4 v2
Windows Media Video v1
Windows Media Video v2
MPEG-1 Video

It does give you the option to burn the DVD to different sizes, 650, 700, 800meg but not to different CD's. It also allows you to burn to a recordable DVD.

I think I'll buy it. It's a nice little solution and only costs $25.

That's gotta be the most stupid, asinine statement of the month.

All in all I have about 200 DVD's. I have made a back up of about 30 of them. The main reason is I like to view them on the move, ie in a hotel, on a plane etc etc. I like the fact that I can have them on the PB HD and view my favs whenever I want without having to think ahead. I guess it's a little like the iPod. MP3 is awful quality yet I turn CD's into MP3s and put them on my 40gig iPod for the convinience factor.

Yes, back up DVD quality is poor but so is AAC or MP3. Yet many don't worry about this quality.

It's funny really. I'm a musician and when someone talks about putting MP3s through their Hi Fi and it makes me cringe. Yet at the same time, I'm sure there are a few people working with film who cringe at the thought of me watching low quality DVD.

Each to their own I guess.

There are apps out there that will allow you to remove the unwanted extras/languages/subtitles and reimage the disc back onto a DVD or to your hard drive so that the quality loss is minimal at best when reimaging to DVD+/-R (and in some cases, nonexistent)...but SVCD is...garbage.

That is probably the best program I've seen on the Mac. It actually feels like an Apple iApp (I used the DivXRay3 for MacOS X beta). It gives you a four day free trial. The only down side is, (well, other then being $25 and proprietary) it seems slow... It's probably fine for a "go to bed" situation... I'm going to have to play with it a bit more.

I've noticed it's a little slow. Hopefully they'll speed it up a little as this is only the beta stage. I do like the interface a lot though and it really is the best app out there at the moment.

It's a bit difficult to reply here between all the off topic posts.

If I recall the procedure correctly, you have to download these three binaries from the given locations and then locate the downloaded files in the installer because it needs to move or copy them to some appropriate place. If it does not continue from that point it might not find the files, though that it silently quits is strange.

For SVCD you'd need MPEG-2
