There seems to be plenty of mysql gui clients out there? Has anybody had any experience with them to recommend one over the other?

I've had good luck with this one.
It's GPL as well.

YourSQL is very handy and free.
I tried a 30 day trial of NaviCat - $100 software(!) but is really nice (including Nice UI for Priviledges)
Of course PHPMyAdmin is very very good and very free - but not a Desktop app per se

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll go check those out. I did already look at PHPmyAdmin and that looks great.

Looks like somebody did a Mac OS X build of MySQL Control Center. You can download it from this page http://www.pogma.com/.

You can also try the Aqua Data Studio (it's a java app and free) and it can be used to connect to most of the main-stream databases. I use on regular basis (for Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MySQL) and really like it.

It's not free ($50), but I really like SQL Grinder. I use it regularly to access MySQL, Oracle, Sybase, and PostgreSQL databases. I really like the schema browser, which is very handy when you go into a situation and don't know the schema of the database you're working on.
Anyway, I bought it a couple of years ago and have been very happy with it. I looked at CocoaMySQL and it's pretty nice, but the cross-platform capability of SQLGrinder is a big draw to me (it uses JDBC drivers, so pretty much every database on earth works with it).

That's really nice - and the UI is better than most Java apps.

YourSQL is rock solid. There will be some new features along soon like auto completion and iTunes style searching of rows. Sign up for the newsletter if you want to get an early release.
