So I'm going for a while, and actually I doubt if I will be back on VLC once I stopped. That means that it is in desperate need of a new Mac OS X developer.
If you like VLC and care for it's future please help in finding a new developer. For the past month it already has become more buggy on OSX than ever before because i have no time and i hate to see this trend continue and be VLC a less worthy mac app than it can be.
Please help us out !

I am very sorry to see you go on this, DJ, but I understand that life, and not applications, must go on. I really, really thank you for all your hard work on this, as it has given me much happiness for a long time. I hope that you have much success and happiness in life. You are one of the good ones!

From The DJ here:
I think it's the only way to not do a half job on two things.
It's really unfortunate that you've been brought to this point in the project and in your life, but I think we understand. Go get some stuff done in real life, man, that's where it counts. Good luck, man, I really appreciate your hard work here on Mac OS X for VLC. I hope over the last year or so that I've been nothing but complementary and helpful to you. Here's to hoping that a talented Mac OS X coder stumbles upon VLC and helps out.

But yea, thanks for all your great hard work and for bring us VLC. Life itself is far more important than developing softwares. Enjoy life while it last.

I second (or third or fourth) all the sentiments here. I love VLC for it's purity in playing media formats. And as much as I'm sad to see ya go DJ, I understand your doing so. Thanks for the great app and the hard work, and good luck in your future.
So who's going to be the hero here and pick this up? There's gotta be someone!

What type of experience would the developer need to have? I'd be willing to work on it but I'm not all that knowledgeable about video codecs...

The osx part (gui, video and audio) is completly seperate from the rest of the program, which will continue to be in full development of course.
you just need to know obj-C and have a basic knowledge of C.
To fix the audio you would need to know CoreAudio and have a mac with a multichannel sound device or something.
I was personally lacking the latter btw. The reason why audio on a G5 still doesn't work with VLC.

I imagine that at this point in VLC's development, there is less to be done in areas not pertaining to video stuff than the converse. It's a bummer, but I see VLC sitting stagnant for awhile. Well not stagnant, because it rocks, but maybe like a flower that is ceasing to be watered; it's ok for a while, but as Mac OS X develops it'll be left to degrade and rot.
Oh my that's sadistic. Yeah, so I hope we can find someone.
edit: It took me a while to write that post, and after I posted I saw The DJ's response and it makes sense that VLC itself will continue to go on, just not Mac OS X's side as much.

For anyone who is interested in VLC development
see the vlc-devel mailinglist
http://developers.videolan.org
the forums
http://forum.videolan.org
IRC
#videolan on freenode
My suggestion is always to check out cvs of VLC first and try to build it. Hanging around in IRC is always good if you get stuck on something.

Don't be soooo somber. I use VLC daily, and if i can no longer do that, i will fix it, however no more than is necesarry for me. Because of that, the application might loose much of it's Mac quality.
Roughly: As long as it plays video and audio on my mac, i won't touch it. However no interface improvements, no bugfixing, no adding new options to the gui, that i don't use and just as well can force from the commandline.

Ah! I realized that my comparison was not very uplifting and probably makes the situation seem a little too dire. Oops. I originally meant to sound understanding to your announcement.
#videolan on freenode? Cool, I'm on freenode quite a bit already hanging out with the Adium guys, they do wonderful things with Adium, maybe one of those fellas would see that Adium 2 is already being spoiled with the tons of interface love it's getting and switch over to VLC.

I might be a good fit, I'm a long time C coder and have gotten a pretty good handle on ObjC. Going to grab it from cvs this weekend and take a look.
My main concern would be seeing this become splintered, with different groups doing different things with it. Somehow an "official" VLC release needs to be maintained.
Just to let you know, I am serious and not just talking. I've got some time right now and being a frequent user of VLC I'm very interested...

As long as you follow the mailinglist or attend #videolan you don't have to worry about that. People there know the goal and understand the mac well enough. And i'll keep a remote eye on the mac development to make sure something like that won't happen
And 'official' is just the stuff that get into CVS. it's as simple as that.

0.7.1 is out
tI advise everyone to look at the opengl videooutput with transparent spinning cube effect tucked away in the preferences.
It's not 100% stable yet, but way faster for G4/400 and up and the optional effects are super cool.
Forgot to fix disable the cpu hogging mp3 decoder, a 0.7.1a release might follow.
Long story short, it's a lot better

There is nüscht. Just [ 0] Video device and Strech Aspect Ratio (neither has any apparent effect).

Try hitting that checkbox in the lowerright corner
We tend to hide these 'useles/fun' options.

Ah there it hid. (the checkbox is in the lower left corner actually in the build I have).
Too bad it doesn't work for me. Must be the card.

Mmm, tells you how long i haven't worked on the OS X GUI
The effects only seem to work for Quartz Extreme machines so far. It's not working for my card either. However, opengl without an effect is still faster displaying for me than the default video output of VLC.

WHOA!!!
I wouldn't mind to see more of these. The transparency is even useful (I just wish I could click through and have a vid as fullscreen overlay ).

Transparency of the window was already in there for a while.
And credit where credit is due, the opengl works was all done by titer, i had nothing to do with it. It's great work. i hope he'll expand his steps into the OS X version.
Oh and it's use is to show off VLC to your friends using WMP and Mplayer

ahum. yeah well, i had some time to spare today, and i saw my dearest child screaming for help and being in pain. So now we at least have something good to work with the next 3 months. And as i said. titer did most of the OS X work in this version.
I only added a "free aspect ratio" setting, for all those widescreen laptop users who want to view 16:9 content.
0.7.1a is out
* someone fixed the issues with the mp3 decoder
* the osx version can now play MOD files as well. (mmm, we may just be one of very few players on OS X that can do that)

See it in action @ FOSDEM 1,5 week ago.
http://www.videolan.org/events/
The linked video on that page shows the left iBook multicasting The Animatrix and Finding Nemo onto the LAN.
The right client laptop runs linux and is showing the color ASCII output.
The left iBook is receiving it's own stream and splitting it in half, showing the left part of the video.
The right iBook is receiving the same stream, but instead showing the right half of it.
picture: http://roy.via.ecp.fr/~murray/photos...m/img_wall.jpg
shows how you can do 'the same' with a transparent window
boring isn't it? I wish we had had the build with the cube effect present but helas.

Wouldn't it be more common to resize with/without keeping the aspect ratio depending on whether the shift key is depressed or not?

Thank so SO much for the last push to 0.7.1. This is a very non-trivial upgrade in my case.
I literally just discoverd VLC last night while trolling the DVDhelp site. It solves two big problems for me: I burn a lot of backups of movies on a Panasonic E100 stand-alone burner. The picture quality is fabulous, but it burns everything as 30fps video (because that's what all the inputs are) and it sets the aspect ratio flag on every disc for 4:3. These are no problem in my home theater, but made these discs unplayable on the Mac - - squished tall thin people and terrible combing on any motion.
VLC solved both of these with its deinterlace options and the ability to force aspect ratio. However, on my aging 400 mhz G4, last night's v0.7.0 played back with nasty random flashing blocks, which I assumed meant I just didn't have the horspower to use it.
The MPEG decoder fix in 0.7.1 must have saved a LOT of cycles, because everything I play back with it is smooth a silk.
Thanks ever so much for a terrific piece of work.
