Let me start by saying this: I enjoy talking to people online. I have dear friends who live all over the world, and it is just impractical to call them all the time or write them letters, so I use AIM to keep in touch. However, there are some people whom I do not enjoy talking to all the time. It's not that I dislike them, it's just that sometimes I wish I weren't in a particular conversation with them. What I want to know is, am I able to sign them off when I'm tired of talking to them? I don't want to block them, and I don't want to "warn" them, because these things are rude, and I don't want to sign off either because then I would not be able to talk to other people online. So is there some sort of program I can use to sign people off of AIM? It would be so nice if there were just some button I could push that said "disconnect DullGirl99 from AIM" or something to that effect.

wouldn't saying "well i gotta go now" and then block them, to them it would seem like you have gone offline. and it would be a lot less rude than logging them off aim.

and plus, who are you to say who can and can not be on aim?

They wouldn't know that I'm the one signing them off, so it wouldn't be rude. That's why I should be allowed to do it.

And if I put a bag over my head and punched you in the face, would that be rude? You wouldn't know it was me.

I think you misunderstood me; this isn't about signing me offline, this is about me signing other people offline. There's nothing rude about it. I could just keep signing the person offline until he/she gives up for the day and goes somewhere else. There's nothing rude about that, it's just a little "server error" as far as they know. So does anybody know of a program that can do this?

No no, that's besides the point. Nobody will know I'm the one doing it, so nobody will sign me off. The point of my post is to let me sign people offline, not the other way around. Glad we're clear on that now.

I would say if you have people named something like DullGirl99 or whatever. What type of person does that make you. I think I know what you mean but, you want to have them temporarly disappear from your list!? Without them knowing? I would say get rid of the ones you don't walk to talk to in an orderly fashion once and for all. Say that they aren't for you. You choose the people on your IM-list.

The new AIM for Windows allows you to remove yourself from a buddy's buddylist. Also, you can go "invisible," allowing you to appear offline but still access your buddy list and talk with people. Being able to kick someone offline, though? That's ridiculous, you have got to be kidding.

And what's up with the different middle initials?

It's not that I want to block people forever, or keep them from talking to me. It's just that sometimes, I think "Hey, you, you just said something really stupid and I don't want to keep this conversation going because you are so boring." But I can't say that to them because its rude, so I would rather be able to make them go offline. Then the next day or so we can talk again.

This is silly. What you're asking people to do is, in effect, leave you alone because you don't want to talk to them. However, your methods are what's goofy:

It's analogous to going sitting in the public park, and having a conversation with somebody, but when you get tired of talking to them, you want to throw them out of the city just so you don't have to talk to them!

If you don't want to talk, tell the person you're talking to that you don't want to talk. Just trying to "sign them off" is not only rude, but it's against the entire idea of AIM.

Just take the responsibility of accepting that they might not like you, and block them.

JB

Edit: *or*, you could just end the chat, and then not accept any more invitations from them.

All I want is a program to make people go offline. Is there, or is there not such a program I can download?

No, so suck it up and if someone is bothering you, tell them.

There are currently no bugs in AIM that would allow this. Nor would I tell you if there were, if you're going to be as puerile as to forcibly sign others off. Aside from being just plain rude (and yes, it is rude even if you don't get caught[/i]), you could cause rather serious problems with such a thing.

I'm sorry, but wtf?

Firstly, "signing off" someone else would be a horribly stupid thing to build into a protocol because it would be ludicrously annoying and open to abuse. What about if someone was annoyed with you, so they decided to "sign you off" so you COULDN'T TALK TO ANYONE ELSE?

Just so you know: this is what the block feature is for. When you block someone, that person no longer sees you as online. That person can no longer message you. However, the only effect on that person is that they are no longer able to contact you. Obviously, this is the logical and sane solution.

If you think anything else, you're an idiot.

This is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time hehe. I can't believe you want to sign someone off. Unbelievable.

Please grow up.
