I categorize my pictures of our son by 6 month period. In other words, in my Pictures folder, I have a folder of pictures from birth to 6 months, 6 months to 12 months, etc.

As I take pictures of my son in the current period, how do I get those pictures into an already established roll without iPhoto creating a new roll?

You can't... the idea of a roll is when you add images to your... they are all one roll.

It's like saying "How do I add a photo to a real roll of film." you can't.

I think you should set up Albums for your photos. It would do what you want to do.

You can add to a roll in iPhoto 4.

Simply highlight the pictures from another roll and drag them into the roll you want them to be in.

I do this a lot.

I also download all of the pictures from my camera at one time although I might not want them on the same roll. Then I highlight pics of the same type, go to file menu and select "New film roll from selection" and it makes a new film roll with those pics in it while removing them from the other roll.

While you can do the similar thing with albums, I personally like the option of being able to do it this way now as well.

No biggie. This is just one of those instances where with the mac, if you try the most intuitive and simplest thing (like dragging and dropping) it generally works.

iPhoto 4 really is nice. The speed improvement is impressive.

BTW. I have my view preference set in the View menu to arrange by film roll and by the newest photos first.

When I do move pictures from one film roll to the other, it reorders my photo library view. I then go to the view menu and select arrange by film roll (even though it is already checked) and it puts them back to the original order. Don't know whether this is a bug or a feature but I did send Apple feedback.
